every time I connect to MSN using trillian pro w/ patch c, i get messaged with the following:

[18:03:27] .NET Messenger Service Staff: You are running a version of messenger that requires an immediate security update. Please visit http://messenger.msn.com/Help/Upgrades.aspx to complete the update.

The email address being used to send the message is messenger@microsoft.com

I have tried blocking the user, and it doesn't do anything.

Have any of you experienced this ? it's been happening to me every time I connect to MSN Messenger, since yesturday, at 4PM.

Like its not enough they mailbombed our email accounts, now they annoy us trillian users.

Mine pops up when I open trillian and on trillian pro it pops up every hour or so. Plus on trillian I'm running about 4 hotmail accounts, so it pops up 4 windows each time

It's because you're not using MSN Messenger to connect.

I get the same messages. Has anybody tried talking to whoever/whatever was sending those?

I've never been a fan of Trillian, i dont like to mix my buddy lists. I would rather have msn, icq, and aim on at the same time then 1 Trillian.

it doesn't mix all your buddy lists, it just holds each one, most of us enjoy having system resources available, so we chose to run one client, instead of 4.

Me too, since I use MSN under Linux. Check out the e-mail I fired off to them a couple of hours ago:

From: "Kirill T." <smiley AT golivewire DOT com>

To: abuse@msn.com

CC: abuse@hotmail.com, abuse@microsoft.com

Date: Today 04:10:09 am

Hello,
There has been a user who has been spamming me on the MSN messenger service.
He pretends to be a Microsoft admin, with the email address messenger@microsoft.com. I try to block him but he seems to have circumvented your blocking system. He tries to get me to "upgrade" because there is an "immediate security flaw". He is a very bad spammer, please disalbe his
account.

Sincerely,
Your valued customer.

If anyone is actually curious why people are getting this message, it's due to the following reasons:

M$ is a powerhungry company out to make money. Now, having established that, they recently announced that they will be implementing security measures which could make it impossible for 3rd party software (Trillian, GAIM, aMSN) to connect via the MSN protocol without a purchased license.

This change will take effect on October 15th, they want all users to upgrade to the latest MSN Messenger which supports the new protocol being established.

Ugh.. man, I'm tired, sorry if I'm sounding incoherent, I haven't slept in forever.

and to think, nobody took me seriously on the other thread with information about MSN restricting 3rd party clients.

This is outrageous, I am a paying subscriber to MSN Internet Access, I should not be restricted to use only their client.

Ask for a refund :D

oh wait - yes you are getting it for free ;) Seriously for the people who are against it, take a step back and look at the big picture. They are supporting and providing a huge network for you to use with msn, if other companies want to profit from this (ie trillian 'pro') then they need to buy rights to use the network! When a new telephone provider wants to offer services using existing telephone lines they must pay a liscensing fee in order to do so ;) I don't have a problem with microsoft doing a similar thing. :)

edit: but that message/email telling you to upgrade is pretty dumb on microsofts part.

I think I'm going to get a Mac. Microsoft is getting unbearable.

Apple have been known to do similar things (not quite the same, but you get the idea) ;)
