View Full Version : Site5's Hyperion Server down again...
Damage 08-13-2001, 03:43 AM For the past few days their Hyperion server constantly is down past midnight for 20minutes to 1 hour or more. I've contacted them but never get a real-person replying to me. What gives? Are they going to credit us for this downtime? I don't suspect this falls within their 99% uptime gaurantee if they have one.
thomas1 08-13-2001, 03:49 AM Yep, received those downtime alerts for Saturday, Sunday and this morning too. Let's give them a chance to reply... or to act.
Sherazard 08-13-2001, 04:56 PM No human to contact and this downtime... All this time I thought they were really good too, word out now is 'they now suck' -_-
They dont even inform users of basic settings like FTP and email. Even pop and STMP, all that stuff had to be guessed (and its not all typical). Not even a mention in the control panel.
markblair 08-13-2001, 04:59 PM It's not Site5, it's NAC. See the following thread as this has been going on for days now...
http://www.webhostingtalk.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=18029
I'm still going to contact Site5 regarding this since they are the host I use but even their main site, site5.com, is down so it is not just Hyperion.
Lonewolf 08-13-2001, 05:36 PM Im getting pissed off i have had more downtime latley than uptime.....
thomas1 08-13-2001, 05:43 PM Hmm, they actually had considerable downtimes during the last three days, today alone 2h 45 min after midnight. During these their main site was up. Even if it's NAC now, I would like to be informed. So far there wasn't any reply from support, nada...

I agree about being informed, and even reimbursed because whether it's their fault or not, I am paying them for hosting. Of course there is probably some clause that denies reimbursement of time down when it is out of their control. I will be trying to contact them as soon as I am allowed to.
Lonewolf 08-13-2001, 05:49 PM It dosnt take this long to do whatever thier doing... :bawling:     :bawling:
markblair 08-13-2001, 06:01 PM It's back up but I still fired off a message on the Site5 Forums to see what's going on. They should be in contact with NAC since they are located there and give some sort of update, let's hope.
MCHost-Marc 08-13-2001, 06:06 PM NAC had to replace their core router which is what caused the downtime. See the link to the thread above. :)
Damage 08-13-2001, 10:28 PM I get this automated e-mail:
According to our records, your request has been resolved. If you have any further questions or concerns, please respond to this message to re-open this request.
It's NOT resolved and I've gotten this every time.
Synergy 08-14-2001, 12:53 AM Oh my complaints
Sherazard 08-16-2001, 03:27 AM They're down again, and slow -_-
thomas1 08-16-2001, 05:44 AM Plus, no announcement or explanation whatsoever on their support forum...
Edited: Matt just announced Hyperion upgrades for today. Still, many wish to know what happened during the last few days.
markblair 08-16-2001, 09:24 AM I even posted a thread in their Forum when they came up last time and it never got posted. They mediate every discussion group and have the choice to post a thread or not. Obviously I asked something they didn't want anyone else to see. This disturbs me because I have never gotten a response from them on it either.
And it wasn't even a negative comment, just a question about what was going on...
thomas1 08-16-2001, 04:23 PM Hyperion... and down it goes again... is that NAC?
Mark, today I suggested an 'open policy' on their boards and my message got posted. ;)
tanger 08-16-2001, 05:02 PM Hi,
I have a site that is hosted with site5. It was just down for who knows how long. Its up now though.

Check again. My post was deleted and I believe yours was as well. Apparently they don't want to address this issue on their forums. I will try sending them a support e-mail even though I don't think this is warranting it. It's like we're asking them where Jimmy Hoffa is or something...
thomas1 08-17-2001, 07:55 AM I am not very amused by this kind of censorship. I have another account with Ventures Online; they practice a different policy: no monitoring, free discussion, criticism that is addressed not suppressed. Even many non-customers are frequenting their boards. Such an attitude gives credibility.
Site5 is a great service. They really have no need to hide anything. Well, enuff ranting...
Damage 08-17-2001, 03:11 PM It's down again as of noon PST.
Vince 08-17-2001, 03:21 PM Hi Damage,
The server isn't currently down, I'm logged in as we speak.
There should be no more downtimes.
I'll outline all of the issues that have occured to date:
1) Hyperion crashed, we've been unable to identify why, but it hasn't occured again. We believe it may have been related to the following issue:
2) Apache on Hyperion ran out of FD's. We recompiled Apache, and this problem has been resolved. This was the cause of the CGI errors some people were experiencing.
3) We attempted a kernel recompile using some custom patches, this caused around 10 minutes downtime.
4) NAC upgraded the switch that Hyperion resides on. As well as other machines, there was a short bout of downtime. We weren't aware this was taking place, so couldn't notify you.
5) NAC had a router die on them. Again, many hosts suffered, and it was fixed within a reasonable amount of time. Once again, we weren't aware until after the event, so could not notify you.
It's very unfortunate that all of these events occured at once, but they did.
We're past them now, and haven't experienced any downtime for almost 24 hours. (Since the last reboot for the kernel upgrade we attempted - I say attempted, because we were unhappy with the results, and are still using our older kernel.)
If you're still experiencing problems with downtime, please email me with your account details, and if possible, a traceroute from yourself to your domain, so I can try to identify the problem for you.
We're very sorry for the inconvenience, and will continue to do the best job we can at all times.
Regards,
Vince.
Damage 08-18-2001, 05:37 AM Instead of leaving us in the dark? If it's going to be out at least tell us why, when, and for how long if you know that information.
I'm still seeing intermittent uptimes here at 2am PST on EARLY saturday morning. It's quite frustrating since I'm trying to send files by FTP and the server cuts me off .
Vince 08-18-2001, 06:34 AM Hi,
As I stated before, we're not having any network or server issues now. So if you're experiencing problems, please email me with your account details and a traceroute from you to the server, so that we can try and get your account working correctly.
This problem appears to be affecting you only. I can't help you if you don't provide me with any information.
Also - We don't send out notification regarding everything we do. It's too much email traffic, and the majority of our clients simply don't want to know.
All of the planned outages (Kernel upgrade, Apache upgrade) were announced on the Site5 support forum before they occured.
We couldn't notify about the other downtimes, because we didn't know they were going to occur.
Once again, sorry you're experiencing problems, and I expect to hear from you via email shortly.
I won't be posting in this thread again, as it's no longer a network/server issue, it's a single client having problems, and providing support here would be breaking the rules. :)
Regards,
Vince.

Sorry but this is incorrect. This is not a single client issue. I had the exact same problem last night between 2:00am and 3:30am. I was trying to FTP files to my site and was unsuccessful. When I checked e-mail, it didn't work. I then tried to access Site5's sites and again, it didn't work. To me, it appeared to be a NAC problem AGAIN but I couldn't confirm that. I do not have e-mail outside of my domain and thus couldn't send a message at that time. Besides, by the time I was really getting tired of it, it started working again. These problems are definitely not one clients issues. There is something going on with NAC and I understand you can't tell us when you're going to be down due to their issues. We just want to know what is going on and what we can expect.
