Do you guys know any good Chill out music? Preferably an instrumental, but if it has words, not alot please. Basically something that would be pleasing to hear in the background. I was thinking more of a Funk/Blues/Jazz/Jam type thing... any ideas? Please do not say metal or some crap like that. Although I do like that type of music (at times), that is NOT what I'm looking for right now.

Thanks.

Are you kidding me? I was meaning more Jam stuff rather than emo/punk and lyrics.

Phish is a good idea, keep em coming. (By no means do you have to have Phish type stuff only)

Artist: Deep Forest
Song: Sweet Lullaby
Shox's Review: This song is so great, it's nice and soft, but not a real lullaby...you HAVE to listen to this...or most of Deep Forest's other songs, they're all great! The music is great if you you're tired of hip hop/rap/metal.

Or any/most songs from Enigma...its sounds almost, just like, Deep Forest's music.

These are good artists/songs...check them out!
:) :) :)

EDIT: Beat me to my post lol...I love Enigma/Deep Forest

Check out the following bands. They would fall mostly under Jam Band / Jazz. I've seen all them in concert and they put on great shows.

Addison Groove Project
John Scofield
Deep Banana Blackout
Soulive

http://artists.mp3s.com/artists/110/org.html does some pretty nice chilled out stuff (my favourite tracks aren't listed on there any more though!).

If you get a chance, check out Dope Ole and Sofa Surfer (by the same artists).

As far as jazz goes there are plenty of different styles, only a few of which are too high energy for relaxing background. One thing you might look for if you are just taste-testing stuff before going out and expanding your CD collection is "Take Five." The definitive version was composed by Dave Brubek, and it both the most popular piece and the most archetypical piece from the "cool jazz" movement springing out of the West Coast toward the end of jazz's reign as the most popular music in the U.S. However, Miles Davis also produced a piece called "Take Five" that is much more inventive while still fundamentally mellow. Of course, when it comes to jazz, Charlie Parker is the man -- in many ways he was to the saxophone what Jimi Hendrix was to the electric guitar. As a result, much of Parker's music is too lively for a passive listening experience. East of the Sun (and West of the Moon) is probably the best album to review for examples of the soothing dimension of his style.

Anyway, on my own PC jukebox, I have a "mellow" playlist that tends more toward the folksy side of rock. It's all vocal pieces, but a particularly soothing listen . . .

Forty Thousand Headmen --Traffic
For What It's Worth --Buffalo Springfield
Two Hangmen --Mason Profit
The Midnight Special --Credence Clearwater Revival
Can't You See --Marshall Tucker Band
I Don't Mind at All --Bourgeois Tag
Thick as a Brick --Jethro Tull
Mother of Violence --Peter Gabriel
Africa --Toto
Be Still My Beating Heart --Sting
Night Shift --The Commodores
Scarborough Fair --Simon & Garfunkle

It creates a nice loop that starts out with an acoustic ballad feel, makes a series of subtle transitions to a few examples of 80s soft rock that doesn't suck, then switches back again. It winds up covering a lot of ground, but sticking with slow tempos and avoiding anything particularly angry or heavily distorted. If I'm in a game that involves shooting people and blowing stuff up, I'll go for something very different, but if I'm in a game that involves building things and making thoughtful strategic decisions, I'll tend toward this, a classical playlist, or something jazzy but much more lively. Of course, you can never go wrong with Phish, although I always find myself switching to some mindblowing high energy jams after listening to a few of their softer numbers . . . I guess it's a habit from the concert days, where they were so skillful about crafting an experience with thrilling highs mad all the more intense for the relaxing yet artful lulls spacing them apart.

Are you kidding me? Punk is the most worthless and phony music ever. Every single song is about a girl.

I'd say some classic music would be good. Requiem for a dream and moonlight senota are all good pieces you should get.

Try the chill house music set by Cafe Del Mar. I have a couple of their albums and they are really good. Not too many lyrics, and very mellow... I listen to their stuff late at night when I'm programming.

I also second the recommendation for Take Five. Brubeck's version is one of my all-time favorite songs. :)

Stevie Ray Vaughan:
Riviera Paradise

You don't need anything else ... just put it on repeat. :)

Get some Muddy Waters. There's a lot of vocals, but it's extremely relaxing music. He was one of the originators of the urban electric blues.

Another great one is James Blood Ulmer ... very soothing [for the most part] Memphis-style blues.

I have plenty more suggestions if required. ;)

Actually, most punk songs have to do with government, society, or randomness. Saves the day is more Emo then punk, which is why all their songs are about girls. Most punk that goes mainsteam is also about a girl, but most people in the punk community hate/do not listen to those songs.

You're welcome for that quick 101 on Punk Music. I'm well versed in most music. :D

Actually, you are referring to what is known as "pop-punk".

Try digging into the "underground" scene and you might actually find some music you like, as it is very diverse.

Try looking up the lyrics to the more known bands such as "Rancid" and "Pennywise", etc.

It only gets less ... hmmm ... female-induced ... the further you look down into the genre.

Radiohead can put you to sleep well, however, if your into jazz, just listen to some great downtempo at http://www.flaresound.com/ or http://www.jazzfm.com/
In terms of newer jazz artists and not internet radio stations, check out Josh Redman or some Hed Kandi.

I've started using Shoutcast lately. At shoutcast.com, you can find hundreds of streams of any genre of music. Right now I'm listening to electronica as 'background music;' earlier I was blasting stuff from the rap category.

Amon Tobin
Massive Attack
Portishead
Ministry of Sound Chillout Sessions

Tons of electronic. Some of them go jazzy too.
