View Full Version : How fast is fast enough?

Hi,

How fast is fast enough in the way of bandwidth for running a server in a commercial environment? I realize it depends on the ammount of users who are on that server. But, what should be expected as a minimum, T1 speeds, or faster? What is everyone else using, and to what success?

Thanks,
Richard

I think most people have burstable connections in data centers. These connections can run much faster than a T1 for brief moments, even though average usage per server is likely to be well below T1. Data centers pool the traffic of many servers on a data pipe much larger than T1.

Rarely is a commercial web server actually run on a stand-alone T1 line. You would get the worst of both ends -- it would be very expensive, and yet you wouldn't get the burst for the 0.5% of time when you need it.
