What would you say the average number of websites and memebrs an average web hosting company has. feel free to make any asumptions. thanks. Examples would be appreciated.

There is no such thing as average customers.
One company has 3 customers another 3 milliion. You can't make an average out of that.

Got to be more specific.

Sure you can..if one has 3 and the other 3 mill, that comes to 1500001.5 customers per host :D

Course, a better way to determine is find out how many approx people have websites on the net, determine how many hosts there are, and do the math.

But really, no matter how you do it, it will always come out to be terribly wrong numbers. Kinda like politics come to think of it..

I'd have to say these are averages based on how long a host has been open for business:

1-3 months: 5 - 10
3-6 months: 11 - 499
6-12 months: 500 - 999
1-3 years: 1,000 - 5,000+
3-6 years: 5,001 - 20,000+
7+ years: 20,001+

Then again, it really depends on how the host advertises and how popular they are.

I would say those are very lofty expectations.
To think one could get 479 customers in the 3-6month period
(5-6 customers per day) is pretty unrealistic, without lots of money to pump into advertising. (and i mean LOTS)

But i woudl love to hear from somebody who runs a hosting company, about their hosts history, and how it became what it is today.

Actually those numbers are kind of low. We didnt advertise outside our own network, and had at least 500 clients within that first 3 months. I dont know how others do, but I feel our rate was pretty good...although it could very well be average. Actually maybe it's a bit above. Our clientel grew way faster than was expected, which recent problems we have had definitly prove that point

Anyway, we are spending a lot to correct the prob which would have been cheaper to have already been prepared for. So yeah, I think the numbers provided are extremely low..

I'm sure that's way above average. One thing I was wondering, is if your counting your clients that you don't charge, and if you are... what % of that 500 were paying clients?

No, that's not counting the free hosting. I rarely factor the free hosting into anything..

It's signups doubled after the big Xoom and Geocities shutdown scare. I'm sure it will double again once TheGlobe/Webjump are closed....and we are nowhere near prepared for such thing to happen again..cost wise we can, but not hardware wise :bawling:

I think a reason you might have gotten so many is they are low cost accounts. I think it is a LOT different when getting customers that pay $15/month. Only reason I am saying this is because most hosts don't get near 500 customers in a year.

Hmm, I didnt know that only 500 per year was hard to get. I would have thought most get at least twice that. We are actually relatively new to paid hosting, so it was pretty much a new thing for us. Our main advantage was our huge network of free sites to advertise on which cost us nothing. Most of our clients were existing free members. Now many of those have outgrown the basic pay account we offered, and are wanting to upgrade as soon as we have the other plans available. So not only did we have more than we could handle getting the basic plans, now many are outgrowing it, and we are having those growth pains right now.....ouch they hurt too :(

Ya, when you're charging $1 a month you're going to get a higher volume of sign-ups. Personally I'd rather have 33 clients paying $15 a month than 500 paying $1 a month.

Err, who has $1/month hosting? Our minimum plan is $4 per month if paid yearly($48).

For 120 megs space and 4 gigs monthly bandwidth at $4 per month, it's a good deal. But at 300 megs and 20 gigs bandwidth for $14.95 a month, Get-Hosted.com is actually lower priced if you do the math.

I do a basic $1 per gig charge regardless of disk space offered..so to offer the bandwidth Get-Hosted does for their basic package, mine would be $20 per month. Yes my price is lower for our basic account plan, but so is the disk space and bandwidth on it..

Kinda gives ya a different outlook on it all now doesnt it? :D

I saw the $12/year plan on your website and assumed you were still offering it... sorry if I was mistaken.

It's lower if you're only counting disk space and bandwidth. Being very general here, if one host is $4 a month and the other is $15 a month, the first host needs a little less than 4x the number of sign-ups for the same amount of revenue. That's 4x more accounts you need to provide administrative and tech support for.

No, this thread is way too arbitrary to change my outlook about anything.

Oh yeah! I forgot that one. That's just the Plus plan on Worldzone Free. Basically free members can order that to remove our banner from the bottom of their pages, and get additional space. It's really not "paid hosting" per se...though I guess it technically would be.

We also normally stick to $1/gb too. Except for specials.

(I tried to make this not be an advertisment. If it is too borderline, please edit)
