View Full Version : Cardservice International horror story

I am a (soon to be ex) customer of Cardservice International. I wanted to share my recent experiences with them, in the hopes that I can enlighten anyone who was considering them.

Basically, I think you should walk away from them.

On second thought, run.

Here's my story:

Around the end of May, I decided that I needed to accept credit cards, for my hosting business. My hosting provider at the time (I've since moved) was OLM (http://www.olm.net). Because they touted a Cardservice International merchant account with a 'good' setup fee ($129), and a 'good' monthly fee ($25/month) to their resellers, I decided that I'd go ahead and take the plunge and sign up.

Man, was that a mistake.

Here are my reasons:
-The 'agent' for my account is listed as OLM. (Specifically, it's cs@olm.net). The agent is (as best I can tell) responsible for getting a customer -- namely me -- to sign up for a merchant account. They're supposed to also provide limited support for my account, and help me setup my system so that I can process cards. I tried on numerous occasions to contact my agent -- and my requests fell on deaf ears -- I didn't hear anything back.

-The Linkpoint (http://www.linkpoint.net) system (the service that Cardservice provides so that I can process cards from my site) actually went down for a day in June! Cardservice made no effort to inform its customers that it was going down -- or that it was currently down. They admitted it after the fact, and made no attempt to remedy the situation.

-Cardservice charges miscellaneous fees (in addition to the gateway, terminal, and transaction fees stated on the contract). My total monthly bill (even when I don't have any activity on the account) is over $42!

:bawling:

-Here is the kicker, for me: Unless you read the contract really carefully you don't notice that you sign up for a 6 month recurring contract with them -- and the penalty for early cancellation in any one of those six month terms is $300!.

The remedy? Well, here's what I'm currently doing -- let me know what you folks think: Because Cardservice's gateway went down, and because they made no attempt to remedy the situation I feel that they didn't offer the services stipulated in the contract -- and that the contract is null and void. So, I'm having my bank dispute any further charges from them and asking Cardservices to cancel my account -- without the $300 fee (or it will be disputed as well).

I also chatted with Jack Wilson at ECHO Inc. (http://www.echo-inc.com), and was so impressed with their customer service, their fee structure (only $10 if you have activity on the account -- no monthly fee if you don't have any activity), their developer support -- for building custom tools for their gateway, and their transaction fees (1.99% - 2.49% + .30 per transaction) I decided to sign up with them.

I think your over reacting.

Number 1 its not card services responsibility to notify anyone if linkpoint goes down, linkpoint is a 3rd party virtual terminal, card services service was up its not thier fault if linkpoint goes down, its up to link point to notify you.

Number 2 Cardservice has 24/7 800 support you could have called them and they could have helped you with any problem you have, it was your choice not to call them.

Number 3, I wont deny card service is expensive, but all their fees are outlined clearly in thier contract, had you read through the contracts you would have seen everyone of the fees your complaining about.

Cardservice is the largest card processor in the world, and why they do have some problems, the ones you have listed arent something that is their fault.

I would have to agree with charles.

We use Card server and honestly they kick ass. Our money is there quickly and they dont mess around.

Overall if you read throught the contract you would have known about the fee structure and what not

Amen to CSI sucking big time. Too big, no customer service - outrageous additional fees, moronic contracts. Avoid at all costs IMHO!

I have card service international (linkpoint) and they are working out great. I have a few resellers who use them as well. They have great 24-7 support and trust me since I work a day job I have used their support.

I'm thinking about opening an account with echo-inc and was wondering if they provide scripts so that webmasters can easily integrate the script on their pages?

Thanks

The developer support is one of the things that sold me with Echo-inc.com -- check out http://www.openecho.com for quite possibly the nicest developer community of its kind.

The contract is null and void because you dont "feel" they offered the services stipulated in the contract?

Cardservice will take you to court, I guarantee it, I've already watched it happen once before for an early termination where the account was closed in good standing, but their gateway software (that was never used as it was not "internet" capable as advertised [might have even been linkpoint, it was diaup based]), and the party had to go with their web driven gateway instead. They still said since the dialup gateway software was shipped (even though they were misleading regarding the functionality of the software), regardless of return, it still had to be paid for in full (~$500 I think). They took it all the way to court, and won (other party failed to properly represent themselves).

Fabri, please stop bumping old threads. I am not sure people who are subscribed to this are much interested by now.
