Hi Guys,
I am thinking of using PayPal for recurring billing, and was wondering what experiences anyone may have had with them.
Is my assumption correct it is a amajor pain paying with paypal if you do not have a Paypal account, and that you have to open one in order to make a payment, or can one just enter credit card details as one would with any other online merchant account?

i can see it being a problem for people who don't have a paypal account. Though it would be welcomed by others.
I would suggest that the more forms of payment you can offer, the better.
Try ibill (http://www.ibill.com) , revecom (http://www.revecom.com) for cc processing or worldpay (http://www.worldpay.com) and authorize.net (http://www.authorize.net) for full blown merchant accounts.

PayPal is the scum of all billing gateways, dont trust them. Although very expensive use WorldPay or something like that, or do cheques. or 2Checkout.com

If you have the capacity, I'd certainly recommend a merchant account. There is so much flexibility, and in the end, expenses are a great deal less than 3rd party processors or PayPal :o
Good luck in your search.

Merchant accounts cannot do recurring billing unless you pay an additional fee ($50/mo with Authorize.net). It is best to have a billing manager to send out the batch to Authorize.net. PayPal would probably be your best choice for recurring billing.

Gateways can handle the recurring billing, many without a fee (eProcessingNetwork, etc.). And of course sending a batch to a gateway for processing would mean storing credit card numbers ;)
Good luck, and I hope this thread has been useful.

Yes, however the data is encrypted. All major billing managers do this.

As a Merchant you would have to open a PayPal account for yourself.
Purchases can then be made for your product/services without people having to open a PayPal account. If they are in the U.S. they can use their Bank account or Credit Card. People outside the U.S. only by Credit Card.
PayPal does not accept Credit Cards from certain Countries so you have to check with PayPal on that.
PayPal is definitely popular with people in the U.S.

PayPal Payments Pro accepts all credit cards, regardless of the country, but the regular PayPal account itself only supports certain countries if that is what you mean.

If you are just starting up, why not? Paypal does it job...
but if your revenue is in 4 digits region monthly consider having your own merchant account... ;)
