I don't remember ever signing up for this service, but here it is anyway, fresh from the INBOX, the headers aren't even dry yet...

** IMPORTANT NOTICE TO THE MEMBERS OF THEGLOBE.COM **

Over the past 6 years theglobe.com has become a vibrant community built on a belief in the power of the Internet to connect people worlds apart. However, the market downturn over the last year has made it increasingly difficult to cover the costs of operating theglobe.com’s website and services.

It is with great regret we must inform you that theglobe.com website will no longer be in service as of 9:00AM EST on August 15, 2001. Members and visitors will no longer be able to access any part of theglobe.com website as of that date.

We apologize in advance for any inconvenience this may cause and are providing you with as much notice as possible so that you may find another service to host your community (see below for a list of services).

If there are files or information that you would like to keep, please log on and retrieve them prior to August 15, 2001. Below, please find appropriate instructions. We will also be sending you information concerning alternative hosting companies over the next several days.

Thank you for your patronage and for the incredible support over the years.

Sincerely,
theglobe.com

well good news for the hosts here I suppose. I wonder if we get as many from theglobe as we did from homestead changing their services.

In all honesty though it's always sad to see an avenue for people to get themseleves online disappear. I don't know what I would have done when I first started out if geocities and WBS hadn't been there with their 400k of free space :)

Hmm... may'be it's just a sign of so many ISP's offering free web space, etc... with their dial up / connection accounts.

I have a feeling that there's nought to worry about there not being any resources for free try-it-n'-see type newbies.
