Hi everyone,

this is my very first post so if I am doing anything wrong please tell me.

We have had a website built using PostgreSQL and PHP and it is currently being hosted with a company whom I will keep nameless. It is so difficult to find a good host for PostgreSQL, can anyone recommend one for me to look at? These are our requirements.

must support:
Flash
PostgreSQL
PHP

extras:
8-10GB transfer
80-100MB storage
unlimited email forwarding
at least 10 subdomains
any cpanel except Hsphere
Price $25US per month or less

Thanks for your help in advance everyone.

Cheers
Todd

Hmmm...

You could try either www.hostmatix.com (http://www.hostmatix.com) or www.futurahost.com (http://www.futurahost.com).

As far as I know HostMatix will be supporting PostgreSQL shortly... maybe next week or so. Just ask them ;)

FuturaHost it's a bit more expensive, but I've heard their support is great.

Hope this helps...

For Flash support, are you talking Flash Communication Server?

I can just see all the threads now from lots of people who have tried PostgreSQL and completely broken it as it's a completely different beast to mySQL. Then again, not much different to now where someone gets a server without having any clue how to admin it and offers web hostign then comes in here when they break it - Yes, I really am such a synic.

We have been looking for a good host of PostgreSQL and many have said they will install it and support it thinking that it is a piece of cake. Please let this be a warning to anyone thinking that they can just support it because it is in their Cpanel... it isn't that simple.

PostgreSQL is a fantastic OS once it is up and running but with regard to hosting it can be a little differrent to set-up to other databases. Our company currently has several websites running for clients on Cpanel, and our host said they could support it but then having tried it and ever etting it to run the way it should had to admit defeat in the end.

Thanks for all you contributions everyone.

Cheers

Take a look at www.blacksun.ca They may have what you are looking for. Email them about PostgreSQL. They did have it listed in the plan specs.
Be sure and convert their prices to US dollar (roughly 2/3 times Canadian $)

Ok, you better go with www.futurahost.com (http://www.futurahost.com). Their PostgreSQL is a "standard feature", plus they don't make use of Cpanel: They use their own control panel (FHBot ®).

They are the one hosting company (supporting PostgreSQL) that I would dare to recommend.

What is the difference between mySQL and PostgreSQL?

DeNasio,

without going into all of the script variations, we chose to have out database written in PostgreSQL for stability factors and stabilty with regard to critical transactions. We avoided MSSQL due to security issues that were raised at the time as well as the cost of licenses. All SQL's are generically the same however some have a few more bells and whistles and others are better for specific tasks.

MySQL performs better than Postgres. However, postgres is more stable. Postgres is a bit more confusing, the commands aren't quite so "simple"

Postgres can handle 2-3 times the load that MySQL on. I think, the general idea is that if you are a hardcore developer, looking for a stable database and you KNOW postgres, go with it. Postgres has a lot of features developers who are familar may use and appreciate, however if you are just learning, or if you are familar with mysql, it probably wouldn't benefit most users to switch.

Check out http://www.HostingTrade.com.
They have PostgreSQL 7.3.3 support and phpPgAdmin 3.0.
Good prices ($10/month for the plan with 250Mb space, 6.0Gb bandwidth and unlimited everything else (e-mails, domains etc.)), best services and nice support.
Very reliable. My site is always up with them.

Just wondering what's your site...

Sorry, here I have been asking all of these questions, our site and please go and have a look and let me know what you think, we are always open to suggestions on how to improve it (although our programmer gets sick of us changing our minds) is www.healththerapists.com. It is still undergoing changes and testing that is why we are seeking a new host now before it gets underway in full.

Thanks everyone for all of your help and advice I greatly appreciate it.

Thanks
