I'm helping my friend out. He runs a popular anime search directory site which gets 5,000 visitors/day for several years now. The domain was bought and maintained by a well known figure in the anime industry but they this person forgot to renew the domain saying NSI never notified them that it's up for renewal.
Now the domain expired and someone else registered the domain for the sole person of selling it at http://domains.nicgod.com - from that site he wants no offers under US$550!
the bastard even turned the domain into a porn site (still advertising the domain forsale)
Now what can my friend do since he's put in 5+ yrs into this domain/site ?
edit: the well known figure in the anime industry bought and maintained/renewed the domain on behalf of my friend.

Well there is nothing that your friend can do unless he wants to pay $550 for it for have a trademark :) Try to give the owner of the domain a threat... I hate cybersquatters.

That sounds a little odd...
NSI generally disables the domain for a period of time and does not make it available to be registered by other parties immediately following the expiration date...
Once the domain is suspended, the domain owner then realizes the renewal was missed, and is then able to renew the domain after which point it would be reactivated.
If the site was getting 5,000 visitors a day, I would think it would have been noticed as soon as the domain was disabled... and long before another party could register it.

yeah i thought the same too.. my friend said that the person who was managing/renewal his domain on his behalf tried for several weeks to renew it after she found out it was due but couldn't access NSI's renewal since it didn't let her renew it (maybe it had expired?)
anyway i tried emailing the new owner with an offer for the domain and his reply was
lol, no
then asked how much he wanted and his reply
nothing you can afford
makes my blood boil
he has similar domains on that site priced to sell at 4 - 7 figure sums so i guess he wants alot more :bawling:
i guess my friend has learnt a hard lesson in remembering to renew a domain :(

Thats really unfortunate :(
Weird, because they are so known for holding onto domains way past the expiration....

If your friends domain was not a trademarked word mark then all he can do is buy it back. I have bought and sold a few domains and I have found having a "poker face" when dealing with the domain speculators pays off in discounted pricing.

Hi,
what for a Name have this Domain ? Does the Domain contain a Name of a Series ?
This Story is a littlebit like anime.de, this was also a long Time a Porn-Site and now after Years the "Owner" forget to renew it and a Anime-Fan now registered it and save it :) - I made this now also with tenchi-web.org and *.net - for first I will redirect it to tenchi-web.com and later will "allow" someone to make a Site (English and/or German) on it.

No one knows, and it might be never (auctioned off at a later date).
