Signed up for web hosting last month but for some reason I cannot get to it via domain name, only the ip address. Doesn't happen all the time, just at the wrong time.
Wanted to show off a current project but all that came up was Cannot find server. Had to look up the ip address. It was working just fine earlier this morning and yesterday about this time so the DNS propagation should have made it around.
Is the problem on my side or server side.
http://www.theswapmonkey.com is the web addy for those who want to test it/check it out.

If you can always reach it using the ip address the problems sounds like your ISP's dns server is not very reliable. Is this the only domain that you have this problem with?
It pulls up with the name for me, I would have to agree with it being an ISP problem.

The problem may also be with your local ISP and how they trace the name to your domain. The other option could also be with your hosting DNS. It's unlikely that both DNS will go down but it happens. You might want to monitor their DNS servers for a while and see how long they stay up. If I remember the site that allows you to monitor IP's and get a report I'll post it but for now just do it manually.

Your page came up just fine here too.
MilkMan, which software did you use to compress your .jpg images?
And how much percentage compression did you use (on an average)?

Compression? Was playing around with Picture Publisher 8 and seeing what it can do which is why the images end in sm, ex nameofpicsm.jpg.
I remember setting compression at 50%. Need to redo them, got pics from Wisconsin that I need to add. Currently the chimp is over in Egypt, hopefully something good will come out of it.

Okie... that's why I had asked!
By the way, the compression should have been a lot better for a 50% setting.
I would suggest you use better software which have better compression algorithms. Do you have access to Adobe Photoshop or PaintShop Pro?
Adobe Photoshop's compression is one of the best in the industry.

It is most def. a DNS problem, another problem is your record could be corrupt or there could be a small syntax error somewhere in your record that causes problesm every so often, we have had that problem. SO if their DNS Servers are not going down all the time I would suggest you ask them to delete your DNS record and re add it this may or may not cure your problem, also do a whois on your domain and make sure it points to the correct DNS servers in the correct order. Theres about a 99.9% chance that the problem is on the host side.
Also in regard to the statement: "it is unlikly both DNS server would be down" its unfortunate but alot of small hosting companys do not keep their secondary name server updated, so if their primary went down even for a few seconds that would explain the problems.

Yep, compression realy sucks don't it, ended up switching the pics back and yes I just redid the compression with photoshop. Less grainy now...
As for the DNS issue, I'll just keep an eye on it since the problem only seems to happen at work, then again other sites have been failing to load as well during little hiccups.
