Which is the correct term to use not only in the industry but in the outside world,

Web Hosting or Webhosting?

Thanks.

I think they are used interchangebly. Some might want to call it Web Hosting, while others prefer Webhosting.

Although only the term "web hosting" has made it to the dictionary so far.

From Dictionary.com:

Usage Note: The transition from World Wide Web site to Web site to website seems to have progressed as rapidly as the technology itself. The development of website as a single uncapitalized word mirrors the development of other technological expressions which have tended to evolve into unhyphenated forms as they become more familiar. Thus email has recently been gaining ground over the forms E-mail and e-mail, especially in texts that are more technologically oriented. Similarly, there has been an increasing preference for closed forms like homepage, online, and printout.

Though Web Hosting is still showing as a hyphenated word "web-hosting" and as two words "web hosting" I imagine it's going to follow the same path as electronic-email and home-page etc...

Though I often wondered why website hosting didn't catch since it's more accurate than "web" hosting in general ;)

If you write them both in MS Word and run a spell check it will tell you that "Webhosting" is incorrect. However as net-trend said they are used interchangebly and I dont think anybody would consider it a typo or bad spelling.

The same applies to "Web Site" and "Website".

That's where the "add word to dictionary" feature for word comes in handy ;)

Who is actually going to take the time and say "Website Hosting" when it can be summerized in just Web Hosting. Similarly I think the whole web is going to be dropped and it will be called hosting in most web discussions.

I believe it should be 2 words w/o a hyphen.

OK, Microsoft was right as it turns out.

The winner is: web hosting.

(Of course in the search engine marketing world we know the real answer is "both of them.")

Personally it doesn't matter. Both "web hosting" and "webhosting" are widely adopted and used. As others have said, I really don't think it matters as to which you use.

I think they are the same.

I don't know if I agree that this will happen, though, up until about a month ago, for the last few years, I personally would always say "hosting" without the "web" part. Only as conversational pieces has it been braught up of what kind of "hosting" it is, but most realize it is virtual hosting, which is more appropriate.

It has also somewhat saddened me that our industry has gone into "webhosting" or "web hosting" when one could once have been titled an "internet presence provider" as we are definately not "internet service providers". :(

I feel more comfortable saying Internet Presence Provider when asked for opening accounts or purchasing new services. I guess this is merely a technical difference within our profession.

BTW, google will suggest "web host" when "webhost" is typed in. There is also a huge difference in bidding price for the two, with the former one mentioned gaining the higher bid.

Well...

In English, they're 2 seperate words. Web and Hosting!

Hope this helps,

I take it, then, that the correct term is web hostess, not webhostess?
