View Full Version : .co.uk question
aakif 08-21-2003, 12:49 PM i have a co.uk domain, registered and hosted by plusnet (www.plus.net).
now i want to transfer it away from them, but they ask for the new host's tag, which I believe is only for UK hosts.
If I want to host this domain outside the UK, i.e US, is this possible, and how?
thanks for any comments
What I would suggest is move it to 123-reg.co.uk for free. You can then update the DNS servers to point to the US ISP

Bladerunner 08-21-2003, 05:02 PM Any host that accepts co.uk domains must have an IPSTag.
Ask the hosts you are planning on transfering in to, they will have a tag.
Alternatively as the post above says, use 123-reg.co.uk
Once it is there then you've got full control over it and can point it wherever you like.
aakif 08-22-2003, 01:25 AM ok, i will try 123-reg
btw, why plusnet charges £45 to transfer out? is it normal
thanks for the help
Bladerunner 08-22-2003, 04:56 AM Unfortunately a lot of companies do charge to transfer your domain away - they are losing a customer so they like to make life as difficult as possible.
However there are plenty of companies out there who will not charge you to transfer out.
Before registering a domain with any company you need to have a read through their TOS and/or e-mail them.
Unfortunately you've really got no choice but to pay.
If you don't pay then they wont release your domain.
I term this "holding a domain hostage" however you unfortunately agreed to their TOS when you took an account with them.
I personally use 123-reg.co.uk for all of my domains, be they co.uk, com, net etc
This is one of those companies who will not charge you anything should you decide to move the domain at a later date.
As also said above you've also got full control of the domain once it is with 123-reg.co.uk so you can change the name servers etc through their control panel.
my_forum_id 08-22-2003, 05:37 AM Don't pay that £45 !
You can release the domain to another Tag yourself directly through Nominet (www.nic.uk) for just £15 - this was introduced to stop companies holding domains hostage.
If I were you I'd write to plusnet and point them to the information on the Nominet site and tell them you'll either pay THEM £15 to release the domain or put a complaint in to Nominet and pay Nominet the £15.
Believe me, they will not want Nominet involved.
aakif 08-22-2003, 07:52 AM If you wish Nominet to make the change of registration agent for you, you will first need to complete our online application form and pay a fee of £15 (plus VAT). Please note, however, that only the current domain name registrant or their authorised representative is able to make a valid request to change the registration agent associated with a domain name.
Am I the domain name registrant or plusnet?? as they registered the domain for me..
I think i should contact plusnet first, as you advised..
any comments
thnx
Bladerunner 08-22-2003, 10:17 AM What is the "Whois" type data for your domain displaying?
I'd totally forgotten about Nominet bringing in the £15 system.
If the domain has been correctly registered under your name then you could speak directly to Nominet - much cheaper option.
If the domain is in their name it maybe a little more difficult.
If your not sure how to get the "registered owner" details up post the domain name here and somebody will be able to confirm for you.
Juarez 08-22-2003, 11:27 AM 123-Reg's tag is: HOSTEUROPE
(incase you wanted to know =])
aakif 08-22-2003, 02:46 PM well, i checked the whois details and found my company name and address there.:D
i think i should now contact plusnet and see whay they say

Actually Nominet will not be interested, it is perfectly legitimate for a company to charge for tag transfers and set their own fee. Nominet was forced under the competition act to provide a way for registrants to transfer to another tagholder this they have done on a cost recovery basis of £15 + VAT.
However you still need a Tagholder ( IPSTAG) to transfer the domain too else you will end up with a £80 + VAT bill from Nominet on top of the transfer fee.
A more imprtant issue which does not seem to be the case here is if the registrant is wrong then Nominet will charge a fee of £30 + VAT to change this plus the tag transfer fee.
( Yes you have to pay the pay the vat figure if you are outside the UK/Europe)
Bladerunner 08-24-2003, 04:53 PM Well then surely the cheapest option for the original poster would be:
Open an account with 123-reg.co.uk (Free)
Choose transfer in domain to account (£4.99+vat for co.uk)
Contact Nominet and ask them to change the tag to either "WEBFUSION" or "HOSTEUROPE" (£15+vat)
Total cost £23.48 as opposed to £45 his current registra wants to charge him or would there be problems there?

Nearly :)
Chose a tagholder that does not have a transfer in fee and only pay the Nominet fee.

i am confused with your reply,, coz u say that nominet will not be interested as the transfer charge is legitimate..
should i go for the transfer with nominet, and is this hassle-free?
i am afraid that this procedure may be problamatic than through my registration agent! ?
please advise..
thanks

OK procedure:
Pick your new ISP they will supply you with their IPSTAG and an acceptance code.
Go to :-
http://www.nominet.org.uk/MakingChangesToYourDomainName/ChangingYourRegistrationAgentisp/
Read the details, scroll down to the bottom and click the link, fill in the form you will be asked for the new IPSTAG give them the one you were given by your new ISP also if you were not given an acceptance code simply enter in the name of the ISP when asked.
Pay Nominet £15 + VAT and your name will be transferred to the new ISP usually within 3 days.
Note this does not change your nameservers this you will need to update once moved over, nor does it make any changes to the renewal date of your domain. I would normally tell you to talk to your current ISP to get them to change the TAG but if that is the price quoted then it is much cheaper for you to go the direct route.
Be sure that you do not request that Nominet becomes the tagholder as this will cost full rate.
If you get stuck PM or email me and I will guide you though the process
