View Full Version : Traceroute explanation please...
MichaelD 08-09-2001, 04:08 PM What do you make of this:
C:\WINDOWS>tracert centralinfo.net
Tracing route to centralinfo.net [63.102.200.10]
over a maximum of 30 hops:

I am unable to FTP anything or access my mail server and I would like to know what the heck the problem is! My host says it has something to do with the UUNET cut cable in maryland, but that supposedly just popped up a few hours ago and I have been having problems for a couple days now.

AH-Tina 08-09-2001, 04:18 PM That is absolutely correct. Your ISP is not lying to you.
We have some servers in Baltimore and, even though the servers are up, most people cannot reach them. We've been told a SprintLink line was cut.
We've also been having sporadic slowness the past couple of days as well - and, although no one wants to take the blame, we are almost positive that it is somehow related. How? I couldn't tell you. All I know is that traceroute always slows WAYYY down at SprintLink the past few days.
Anyway, we've been assured that they are doing their best to fix it.

MichaelD 08-09-2001, 04:35 PM Tina,
Thanks for the prompt reply.
A few days ago I was able to FTP to one site but not another... now I can't FTP to either. I am getting a different error from my FTP client now... instead of "network is unreachable" I am getting "connection timed out". Not sure if that is an improvement or not! :)
I just recently started promoting an application I have developed and this all comes at a very bad time! :( I can't FTP updated files and I can't respond to emails. I was able to POP my mail, but it's tacky sending out business emails from a yahoo address and rather annoying to keep track of.
I hope the problem is solved soon as I am anxious to get back to work!

AH-Tina 08-09-2001, 05:04 PM I know, it's very frustrating. Try explaining to 2000+ customers that our servers aren't down - really, it's outside of our network!!!
BTW - I private messaged you. You can email me back at tina@affordablehost.com

venomx 08-09-2001, 05:21 PM hmm
Question for you all...
I have been getting pinged out and timed out the last few hours from my BurstNet server. I know they have a Sprint line but would this really do anything to me since we are both in Pennsylvania?
AH-Tina 08-09-2001, 05:43 PM It depends - if it is on a path between you and your server, then "yes".

MichaelD 08-10-2001, 01:22 PM Is anybody else having an FTP problem that they think is related to this? It would be nice to know I am not alone!
UUnet has removed the "outage" message from their site... that makes me think they have fixed the problem... but I still can't FTP?!?
*bangs head against hard object*

hitspot 08-10-2001, 01:48 PM Michael,
First, breath..
Can you reach the server from your web browser?
Contact me at hitspot@hitspot.net if it's still not working, and I might be able to help.
Good luck,
David Kiley
AH-Tina 08-10-2001, 01:53 PM I'm sure the rest of us would like to benefit from your wisdom as well - why not post the "solution" here?
--Tina
hitspot 08-10-2001, 02:02 PM I do not have a "solution", was simply offering to troubleshoot. Which would be faster via email.
Traceroute packets are basically the lowest on the list to be processed by routers. Try using ping instead to see if there is any latency or not.
MichaelD 08-11-2001, 08:51 AM Sorry I didn't post more info yesterday I was so tired of dealing with it that took the night off last night.
hitspot,
I could browse regular pages of my sites (most of the time). It was FTP and accessing my Mail log in page that were the biggest problems.
It doesn't matter now anyway...
Just when I was starting to think the problem was mine... I signed on this morning and viola! Everything is back to normal! I don't know why and personally... I DON'T CARE! It has been a rather tense Tuesday to Saturday experience and I am glad I can put it behind me. Thanks, for the moral support! ;)
Regards,
Michael

This is most likely caused by the train that de-railed in Baltimore in July. Several fiber feeds were cut and or destroyed by fire after the derailment. Anybody using Alabanza (based out of Baltimore) will likely have problems access their sites until these lines are restored.
