View Full Version : FreeSSL
winquest 08-09-2001, 02:50 PM There was a topic about SSL cert. Some mentioned FreeSSL.com offering 70% compat. free SSL certs.
I thought I might check it out and share my experience here. Any one with experience care to share?
The Prohacker 08-09-2001, 04:36 PM I have ordered one, and sent them the csr, everything worked great, got the cert in about 2 hours. I just haven't had a server to test it on....
big_smooth 08-09-2001, 05:12 PM When you do get the SSL, apparently it gives you an alert if you're not using a particular browser...Is it IE5, NS 4.7 and above?
drhonk 08-09-2001, 05:36 PM I got mine within 1 hour after I submitted my request. It's been working fine using IE .. I haven't test it using Netscape tho`

It supports IE5.01 and higher. I tried it with NS and it poped an alert. You can either accept to enter via the SSL or not with Netscape.
big_smooth 08-09-2001, 07:20 PM At the end of the first year, it's 80 bucks...(according to sales rep i talked to...)
until tomorrow (friday, august 10th) apparently, you can get a cert for 50 bucks, and you can resell it...(for host providers..)

Hmm, I was looking into that for my SSL needs too. However, I thought it was free and you only paid when you renewed?
From their FAQ, FreeSSL is available without charge for the first year. Upon renewal, FreeSSL customers will be charged a small fee.
The Prohacker 08-09-2001, 10:02 PM If your going for reselling, then https://certs.tucows.com might be the way to go, I've been reading up on them, looks fairly new. I might have to give it a try...
winquest 08-10-2001, 01:40 AM The free cert is only 70% compat. and it supports NS 4.7 IE 5.01 & above. For $49 we get included in Geotrust. The $79 cert think gives you 98% compat. I've got it installed using NS without error but when using IE, it prompts an error.
mahinder 08-10-2001, 06:03 AM i have analysis that only 63% people use i.e. 5.x or higher so you will loose reset 37% which don't use i.e. 5.x or greater if you use FREESSL.
winquest 08-10-2001, 06:11 AM I've installed the cert on my site https://sgwebhost.com. In Ie 5.01 when you view the cert, it shows no error, but anything below the version, when view cert you'll see an exclaimation mark. So I guess its nice to have on the site as an example, but not for actual use.
winquest 08-10-2001, 06:13 AM Afterall the cert is free .... and it performs as required. I believe microsoft has a update for the list of cert providers that can be downloaded.
mahinder 08-10-2001, 08:19 AM but it scares visitor visiting to your web site. specially if you use it for payment collection etc.
Lah_Lah 08-10-2001, 09:24 AM what is the different between the freeSSL and other Cert

For payment collections, I think it is still better to stick with the 98% compat. certs :) I'm using it to show that my site works with SSL :) Nothing else.
