View Full Version : cPanel VPS
MattE 08-20-2003, 03:30 PM I notice the cPanel VPS has been available for quite some time, and is free. (still?)
Anyways, I was wondering if any hosts have had experience with this software. I'm looking to start offering VPS services, but would this be a good option? I'm extremely fluent in the cPanel server setup and administration; I understand that the inner workings would be a bit different, and unsupported. Each VPS would have it's own cPanel/WHM setup, no?
I've done a bit of searching within this category without much to show in terms of stability, options, etc. Just wondering if it's worth looking into.
Regards,
Matt
Andrew 08-20-2003, 06:14 PM Without any docs or even a statement from DarkOrb about the software even existing, I've been discouraged from trying it as well.
I'd really love to give it a shot.
MattE 08-20-2003, 09:38 PM Figured it's been out so long.. may have been tested a bit, heh.
I'll try it out on a dual xeon @ RS and see how it goes. Hoping it's still free, heh. I guess if they don't acknowledge that it exists, they probably aren't charging for it, yet.

Matt
Esr Tek 08-20-2003, 10:27 PM I was actually just looking into buying a server and testing this out too :)
However I do not plan on putting any kinda clients sites on it, just run it and see how it goes.
mainarea 08-20-2003, 10:37 PM You can actually install the CPanel VPS system without having CPanel on your server, I tried it on my freshly installed linux machine and it did work (except for the fact that I didn't set up the machine to boot to the VPS and I didn't have unpartitioned space).

JonnyQuags 08-20-2003, 10:49 PM cpanel uses an open source vps program at
http://www.solucorp.qc.ca/miscprj/s_context.hc
There are others too, off the top of my head there is user-mode-linux.sourceforge.net/ and I believe freevsd.org is another.
MattE 08-20-2003, 10:59 PM Would you be required to purchase a cPanel license for each VPS?
In those pictures of the VPS management interface, it shows that it's "installing cPanel" -- would a normal cPanel license be needed for each VPS, then?
Rather, I'll find out soon, heh.
Regards,
Matt
JonnyQuags 08-20-2003, 11:02 PM I have never used the cpanel vps, but I would assume you would not need a cpanel lisc for each. Once set up a vps would be similar to a dedicated server, from there you can add whatever software you want.
Genocide 08-22-2003, 09:52 PM Interesting heh, I've been thinking about getting into the VPS market myself.
JustinH 08-22-2003, 10:17 PM Yes you do need a license for every VPS, but they are discounted. Talk to Daniel at EffectOnline. Great guy and $25.00 is as low as you can get a VPS license for :).

If I could just get the installation to work =) heh.
Thank you for the info!
