Hello,

I want to host a online selling store and would like to know what would best work for me. Windows 2000, Unix, or Linux plan?

And is any of them in particularly...

1) faster
2) more reliable
3) mores ecure
4) less downtimes
5) easier to setup
6) supports more stuff ( scripts, cgi, asp, php etc )

I normally find UNIX plans to be more expensive than Windows 2000 Plans but mostly sites i come across are Unix.

Can somebody give me some feedback on what would suit me?

People wright books about this stuff I doubt that you would be able to find an answer thats long.

Anyway, Linux is more stable, free, more secure, most likley less downtimes, linux supports almost all the scripts.

i would say to never use windows hosting unless you absolutely need it... for things like MS SQL/Access. ASP can be run on linux with chilisoft, etc... if you don't "need" those the best bet would almost always be running on a linux server... they're far more reliable, secure, don't have the code red worm issue ;)

generally the continuous uptime of a windows server will be far less than that of a linux server, i usually see that windows servers need to be rebooted at least once a week, and some on a daily basis.

from my experience though, windows hosting seems to be much more expensive...

Agreed Linux comes to be more stable than Windows..Linux is basically based on Unix you can say its a flavour of Unix...While there can be lot that could be discussed over the stability and other issues what matters in your case is the application that you wanna run ....If your online store would be heavily using databases which are in MS SQL or ACCESS or other scripts which require Microsoft enviornment then i would suggest that you go with windows based hosting ...yeah uptime could be a lil problem but never a mojor one trust me if you sign up with some of the good hosts ...you can have a search and find out the windows based host ..one personal level i could always recommend M6.net , crystaltech , pwebtech or people-connect.

but better you check out with them first...its always useful to make use of others expirience and your senses when you make a decision ... :)

windows = worms, viruses, patches, updates, ease of use, lots of administration and of course bill gates Bill's :D

Linux = stability, scalability, performance, reliability, little bit difficult for newbies, open source and well supported by communities. ;)

Over the years Windows has proven to be buggy, unstable, and
full of security holes that are often exploited by virus writers.
Windows servers tend to be pricey because they require far
more maintenance than Unix or Linux servers.

Unless you want to run active server pages, avoid
Windows like the plague. Too many people either hate bill
gates or have too much time on their hands.

Well MS Sql is all different from My Sql.. the former is a microsoft product and the latter is an open source...if you are planning to use MS Sql i suggest go with Windows in case of My SQL you have to go with Linux or Unix based hosting

MySQL is a database management system.

As to whether it is necessary for an online store, it really depends on how you set it up, I guess. You can head here for more info.

Aloha

uhhh the fun question
remember this eithe runix or win hosting will require you to install patches fixes etc...
bot of them have holes
everybody loves to bash windows
linux boxes such as Redhat have many exploits for them that can let you gain access adn control of a system

first off ask yourself what you want to do
is there certain software you want to use and what os does it require

both can be secure a newbie on linux will have a more open hackable system than a well seasoned windows person

a secure system is a secure system and to that no system is ever %100 secure

find a hosting company that will help you out and manage your server for you either system will do what you want
if you do not need asp pages then go unix as it is more popular and mroe people offer it and it is cheaper to run.

if you need asp pages do not use chilisoft it is to limiting for asp

Unix is the mother of all :)
Next is GNU which is GNU's Not Unix, a unix like OS i think it was in the 80s.
Next is Linux which is a Kernel which is using a GNU based OS.

Another reason not to use Windows.
Microsoft's Hotmail servers got hit with the Code Red Worm
last night, because THEY hadn't installed the patches.

Its whole different department I doubt they even keep up with it.

I remeber I once read an article that M$ was using FreeBSD for their hotmail servers.

Look like they don't.

I think you got that just a bit backwards :)
MSSQL is run on Windows. MSSQL Server is a distinct server (not Windows) that is not typically offered for hosting as it is *very* expensive.
MySQL can be run on *nix/Windows/*BSD/etc.

Prior to the release of Win2k, hotmail did run on a flavour of linux, they (from what I had read) were having enourmous difficulties in converting their system to work on NT, thus they ended up keeping FreeBSD for a long time after MS purchased them. It was probably the greatest irony in computing that there could be for a while.
