View Full Version : Best forum software
ttremeth 08-19-2003, 12:03 AM I have an organisation that needs to the best forum software that has a low CPU impact and the database is not easily corrupted. Is there a forum software that hosts with years experience find the best for a heavy traffic site. (ie 100 users on line)
Thanks
hostjet 08-19-2003, 03:57 AM vbulletin is one of the better forums available on the market.
UH-Matt 08-19-2003, 04:35 AM If you dont mind paying then go for VBulletin as its by far the best.
If your looking for free software then consider Invision or phpBB.
dside443 08-19-2003, 04:49 AM I would recommend vBulletin, then phpBB.
CatchyHost-Royi 08-19-2003, 05:32 AM vBulletin then phpBB & YaBB SE.

midPhase-Josh 08-26-2003, 11:11 PM -- VBulletin.Com
-- InvisionBoard.Com
-- PHPBB.Com
Daijoubu 08-27-2003, 02:12 AM Lowest CPU usage? IPB being the fastest, vB which handle pretty well and phpbb (without template caching) the slower of the trio
None will corrupt more or less, in fact none should. Since it's NOT related to the forum.

Razer 08-27-2003, 06:39 AM VBulletin--The best money can buy.
Second choice is either phpbb or invisionboard.
I hear Wolf Labs or something is quite resource efficient. I personally purchased a vBulletin license. There are many threads concerning the issue of forum software so you might want to try the search option, I'm sure you'll receive some decent threads :)
RossMAN 08-27-2003, 02:48 PM vBulletin - best commercial forum software
InvisionBoard - best free forum software
Mark_TVI 08-27-2003, 04:09 PM For now VBulletin is the best but there are always new products coming out that could be better.
As for Invision, I think it's funny how their resource usage is not all that light and many remarks have been made about how many members it could sustain at one time online. Invision's answer to this? Change the current members online statistics to include the last 30 minutes instead of the previous 15 minutes. :D
If it's free you want go for phpBB, there is a great support community there and you don't need to register your forum to get support. It's open source...
Ronald_Craft 08-27-2003, 04:27 PM i'm actually using webwizard forums. it's in ASP and is surprisingly easy to addon to and works quite well. i've had no issues with it, and install is a easy. I'm not a real fan of PHP forums, so this forum works great for me.
eHostSpace 08-27-2003, 05:28 PM Free and Easy - www.invisionboard.com
Hosting Gate 08-27-2003, 07:00 PM I would recommend VBulletin , it's the best forum software in my opinion , and if you don't want to pay to buy vbulletin I would highly recommend phpbb
good luck

soompi had IBF running until someone recommended "some purple board", they bough a licence, converted/installed it and BOUM, killed the server, didn't took long to came back to IPB :p
At least it show activities based off the past X minutes, not like some purple board hiding it ;) (no offence!)

The other forums wouldnt show their server load but look at the execution time.[ Script Execution time: 1.5613 ] [ 11 queries used ] [ GZIP Enabled ]
Invision is not that *light* on the resources....
Daijoubu 08-27-2003, 11:39 PM Depends on the hw behind it lol :p
But 0.1xxx for 5.x load is good o.O
soompi now have 439 and it loaded at:
[ Script Execution time: 0.1139 ] [ 11 queries used ] [ GZIP Enabled ]
They have safe_mode skin mode on though...adds 2 queries per page view, gonna help her fix that lol...
Mark_TVI 08-28-2003, 12:06 AM safe_mode would be on most shared servers...
If you're happy with .1x as execution speed then that's great.
From the Invision forum
[ Script Execution time: 0.1029 ]
[ 10 queries used ]
Wouldn't you rather have this though?
8 queries in 0.051 sec.
I know I would....
tazd9t9 08-28-2003, 06:26 AM V Bulletin is the best but then i would say invisionboard over phpbb as i have had problems with the phpdb in the past
Nairos&Co 08-28-2003, 08:19 AM vBulletin is the best, but I feel there is a lack of mods, templates etc. phpBB has a lot more templates mods etc, but that is because it is a free board, and has many more users.
alex1950 08-29-2003, 11:30 PM If your looking for free software i would recommend phpBB.

bagfull 08-30-2003, 06:08 AM phpBB... no neet to go for paid ones... this one is just too good!

Hello&Co 08-31-2003, 10:50 AM Hello,
I am using VBulletin and am very pleased, I have also used phpBB, and was almost equally impressed with the features available. I would definitely say VBulletin is the best then phpBB.
willie140853 08-31-2003, 11:16 AM I use phpBB all the time with over 300 mods installed it is a dream to configure for admins.
Daijoubu 09-01-2003, 12:01 AM You can't do much with a vanilla phpbb, it's lacking many features
That's why you need to get 300mods :D
alex1950 09-01-2003, 02:50 AM I would recommend phpBB. which has been around for years
now it is free at.
www.phpBB.com
Frotax 09-03-2003, 10:18 AM Im leaning toward phpbb just becasue it interfaces with php Nuke(down the center of page)
But what about phpPOSTNUKE BB for phpPostNuke?
Are there many themes for Invision Board? Seems kinda plain from all the ones Ive seen
Last what about this one Not mentioned thats free XMB Forum at http://www.xmbforum.com/
Lonny 09-03-2003, 12:31 PM Vbulletin.com and phpbb.com
too many hacks ad patches for you to say no, it does everything but making you coffee

PnphpBB2 is the module you are looking for that integrates with PostNuke. It picks up the theme and Member tables from the PostNuke module so there are no separate skins and one login for both the PN site and the forums. It's a pretty sweet integration. Invision just doesn't work well with PostNuke integration....
Daijoubu 09-03-2003, 01:13 PM Oh god, phpbb and Nuke (Well PostNuke is better than PHPNuke...)
Those who run PHPNuke with a downloaded skin shouldn't have a website in the 1st place ¬_¬ (Not talking about you TVI)
*Download and install a skin. Yay! I made a website! woohoo* pftttt yeah yead  /sarcasm
Most of them looks the same too...
Bloated and ressource hog (slow and unoptimized sql structure)
/rant

MMMMM
Anyone care to write a mod so it will make coffee or tea.......
:D :D
I have also noticed that IPB are coming with a module called IPDynamicLite yet another instant website.
Venomous 09-04-2003, 09:40 PM Go for vbullettin
RobertBasil 09-05-2003, 02:47 AM Want a professional looking forum? Run vBulletin.
Want to look cheap? Run InvisionBoard or PHPBB.
IMHO
Daijoubu 09-05-2003, 09:38 AM Are you saying running Apache is cheap too?
vB is using PHP, which is free, does it make vB looks cheap? No
It even use MySQL where IPB and phpbb works with MSSQL and others dbs as well...
Grow up dude, free doesn't necessery mean "cheap"
I hate those vB fans that think "You get what you paid for"
Genocide 09-11-2003, 05:45 AM Invision Board > vBulletin (if client wants it) -> phpBB
Frotax 09-11-2003, 08:21 AM what about this new NS Nuke I believe its called. Supposed to be the end all to the Nukes. Any thoughts on it and its BBS?
I believe its already launched.

oracleweb 09-14-2003, 05:10 AM Greetings
I wonder how many of you Vbulletin folks..have used ubbthreads.
I beleive Ubbthreads EASILY beats Vbulletin especially in speed...
It's funny ..web hosts seem to say VBulletin is best...but major sites like A and E and Playboy etc say Ubbthreads :)

www.infopop.com Infopop was the pioneer in the BBS market. It's not surprising to see they have retained a large part of the market share. However being first doesn't make you the best. Windows came before Linux but I wouldn't say Windows is a better server OS, in fact I'd say Linux is far superior....
