midnite 08-18-2003, 04:29 AM Hi,
Anyone know the software needed to run a webhosting business, and that is low cost? Like I want to run a web hosting business, so people can register domain name on my site, and pay on my site. What kind of software is good with that, and ez to manage. and also ez for the customer to manage. like adding email stuff like that? Please advise. I really want to start my own webhosting company.
thank you..

drams :: http://www.dramsystem.com/
Enom :: http://www.enom.com/
- Enom is a domain registrar that is compatible with "drams".

Your best bet is to pick up a server at RackShack (http://www.rackshack.net/) w/ Ensim or cPanel on it.
Ensim :: http://www.ensim.com/
cPanel :: http://www.cpanel.net/
Ensim and cPanel are both control panels for webhosting companies. They have all the features needed to host websites.
Once you get the server play around with it, read the forums and host some friends sites for free to get the hang of it.
Also, I would recommend using Google to find more information on what people post in the future. Google is a wonderful thing.
Joseph_M 08-18-2003, 07:21 AM No offence, but if you don't know what Enom/Drams is then why are you even trying to compete in the domain industry, there's no massive wad of cash being earnt by every new domain reseller.

Yep, you'll need something like ...
an enom ETP account $6950
3rd party software like drams, or write your own
a cPanel licence, $1400
a decent server $3000+
collocation and bandwidth - $100/month minimum
and about 20 hours/day to run it all
:D
*then* maybe you can think about going and getting some customers ... it's *NOT* going to be a get-rich-quick programme to help you get some sweets on the way to school

Ouch. That was alittle harsh. :D

Ouch...someone's a little bit bitter aren't they?
Joseph_M 08-18-2003, 12:04 PM Bitter but True, too many people think that they'll make $500,000 in the first month of opening with their only outgoings being $10 for a dedicated server. Too many little kiddies in it for a quick buck and then go back to school for the rest of the week. Even though SOME claim they offer 24/7 support, its actually "When I get home from school, and when I'm online at weekends" support, or even worse with some people in AUS it happens to be "1 Hour On Saturday Morning Is Our Support Day" yet they claim to be "hosting professionals in the industry for 6 months!"...weird how their domain hasn't been registered yet....lol anyways back on topic DONT DO IT!
VanHost 08-18-2003, 01:13 PM I understand Joseph's point completely, however, it was a bit harsh. I do think that there are too many people (not just kids) that think this is a lucractive business with ZERO leg work.
You have to put in your dues and work hard at this business. And it is just that....a business. Web sites are something people rely on, and do not want someone who is looking for some spending cash for the weekend to be hosting them.
Just one man's opinion as I float away into the wind!
d2dexter 08-18-2003, 01:46 PM not everyone is in it for a big buck. my site
www.d2itemstore.com makes me about 2,000-4,000 a month.
and i am 16.
VanHost 08-18-2003, 01:54 PM That's some pretty decent moola. Nice work. I am not saying everyone is it in for a big buck. But I am against people starting a hosting company for a summer job. You are basically playing with something people rely on...their websites.
Like I said, just my opinion. It sounds like you've got yourself all set. Thanks.
d2dexter 08-18-2003, 02:08 PM i plan on creating a hosting company myself. i need to fully finish my business plan first, i don't want to put any money in without having a higher return with my money. i understand what your saying.

Are you serious? Selling fake items (that are worth NOTHING).. and somehow making 4k a month??
Id like to see proof of that..
Im obviously in the wrong business.
Atomm 08-18-2003, 03:25 PM He's not the only one..... Look at this article on the BBC (http://newsvote.bbc.co.uk/mpapps/pagetools/print/news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/3135247.stm)...
Atomm
Amish_Geek 08-18-2003, 03:46 PM Isnt that illegal? I know sony sqaushes people who do similar things for EverQuest. One would think that Blizzard has a clause stating that you cant sell parts of the game, or make money off the game.
VanHost 08-18-2003, 03:59 PM Well the guy in the article Atomm posted, was selling for Ultima (made by Orion) and apparently Orion was going so far as to "encourage" the sale/trading of the gaming inventory.
I for one have a hard time comprehending how people can make 6 figure salaries selling "digital inventory" I am in the wrong business for sure!
THW-Dave 08-18-2003, 04:09 PM did someone mention time and patience?
good.
midnite 08-18-2003, 09:05 PM What kind of software do i need for webhosting? Like when people sign up for webhosting. how does it go into my database? I understand the cpanel, and espiem. Those are control panel that make setting up ftpusername and account eziesly. I mean how do others, set them up online thru a web brwoser.?
VanHost 08-19-2003, 02:06 AM My suggestion is building a site and getting a reseller account for a couple of months until you get the hang of things. You need to know what you are doing BEFORE you can properly sell yourself to others.
Thanks.
midnite 08-19-2003, 04:23 AM how do you get a reseller account? I need something that is automated. like user come to my website and register and sign up for what they want. then they pay. after the payment they can log into their user account, which they can manage their domain name.. is there something like this?
thanks
I know how to setup a webhosting account and all that.. just need a customizeable software with instant traanscationl.
weblord 08-19-2003, 11:27 PM webhosting business is different from domain name registration business, i see that you want both, start with rackspace, rackshack, servepath or nocster but my advise is to you if you're not that technical savvy, is go first for reseller accounts on different hosting sites, it's because you need to deal on a daily basis those little annoying hassles such as : hacking.. and many more
