I'm looking for some free software that will monitor my server and contact me when the server is down.

whats the best to use?

There are several software you can use ..

1. What's Up Gold (Windows - port check, ping check, etc.)
2. Netsaint (Linux, FreeBSD, any flavor of Unix - port check, ping check, disk space check, etc.).
3. Intermapper (Macintosh) - this one is probably one of the best I've seen so far, with features such as :
- port check, ping check ( the common stuff ).
- support snmp
- real time connection utilization reports.
- real time connection checking (support ethernet, T1, T3, Frame Relay, etc.)
- real time graphical reports
4. Compaq Network Monitoring Service (probably the closest one to the famous HP Open View and it's FREE .. :) )

Get the newer version which is version 2.2.6, I tried version 2.2.2 and it gave me error all the time.

Oh .. forget to tell you .. CNMS need SNMP installed on all network elements that you want to monitor. It can do real time graphical bandwidth utilization which you can add alarm to it. It's a powerfull software.

I am using three different monitoring services (qwkmon, http://www.internetseer.com and http://netmonitor365.com), but so far QwkMon seems to be the most reliable.

Qwkmon, netmonitor365, and internetseer ... all are good services ... if you have a website only. But if you run the server yourself .. you will need something that can monitor every service you have running in your server such as SMTP, POP, MySQL, Apache, etc ..

I don't think all three can do it.

Just a tidbit of information... QWK.Mon can monitor a number of other services besides web, including SMTP and POP. Support for MySQL might be added, but your MySQL server really shouldn't allow arbitrary connections from the outside world anyway. ;)

try internetseer.com free internet monitoring service.

www.expertmonitor.com when they fully launch later this month will monitor everything - email, dns, ftp etc etc. I have no idea how good they are, but just thought I'd give it a mention
