I have a customer that checks there POP mail account every minute. I am just wondering if this is a big deal. Does this add to bandwidth or use resources to a point that I should be concerned?
Seems excessive to me, but they have a number of users that need to get email quickly.
Thanks,
Scott

The resource usage is comparable to a website which receives one visitor every minute. Is that excessive?

I don't know where you could get it but I know that bn3 use a system that each time the mail is checked to often it sends an E.mail telling them that it's best not to do so (just imagine 60 mails to delete per hour, might put him off doing it so often

I'm sure if I asked, they might ease up a bit. I was just curious what the opinions were out there...and what kind of resource issues I would have. Sounds like it is no more than a page hit...

Each of the POP connections consists of 1. verifying a username+password. 2. Looking at the user's mail file to see if there is any mail to download. 3. If there is mail, transferring it.
The cost of actually transferring the mail is going to be the same regardless of how often you check your mail, so the only additional cost of checking every minute is the extra authentication and examination of the mailbox. That won't be exactly the same cost as a page hit but it won't be far off.

Aloha
man this would suck big time
I have mine to check every 5 minutes
time is money I need to be up on things
every minute is to much for me but a stock broker or techadmin etc... should be every minute

Bn3 nagging system is stupid , use it and you'll lost customers.
Guess a customer who check mail only once a day but he press 'send and receive' twice in a minute. He shouldn't deserve such annoying message.
I just look at log file if anybody check mail too often and email him that I'll move him to the lower quality server. He often stop doing that.
I thing it's better to write a client program like MSN and a server progarm that will alert to client when there's new mail in the server (like icq).

Hi,
I check my sales mail box every minuite as I like to have speedy responces which my clients love...
In Australia we pay per mb of ingoing traffic ( but unlimited outgoing ). Ages ago I was thinking of this and how much it would cost me per month ( not that I mind ) but I set myself up with a new RaQ and a user with the raq not broadcasting anything, i watched the server network port for activity and it was next to nothing. I remember doing a calculation and it working out to be only a few mb of transfer per month...

checking email doesn't use much of anything, at all you shouldn't have to worry about it.
