Hi,
I have 2 boxes with me. One is running windows 2000 pro and other is running Red Hat linux 7.1...
I have setup a network between them.. the linux machine has to NICs, eth0 [ internal network ] and eth1 [ cable connection ]....
when i ping my windows box from linux, i get good responses... but when i ping my linux box from windows, i get a time out error... my routing tables are correct.... both the systems have the same subnet masks...
anyone got any ideas on how to solve this problem?

Can you post the IPs & subnets you have assigned? That would help.

my ips are 192.168.1.2 -> Linux
192.168.1.3 -> Windows2000.
Subnets for both are 255.255.255.0

Do you have any gateways set-up on W2K machine (there should not be)?
I know this is silly, but are you running an ICMP services (and no firewall) on the Linux box that will respond to a ping?

I have it enabled :)
No gateways are setup :(

One possible hiccup..
Check that you have IPV4 packet forwarding allowed on the Linux box.
Check for firewall on the Windows machine (Zonealarm?)
Other than that... Not sure...
Hope that helps

Hi Kunal,
For what it's worth, in situations like this I always remove possible causes of problems and take the system down to just the basics, and then use a process of elimination. So I would;
Disable eth1 (cable connection) on linux box.
Connect both systems using crossover cable directly.
Check both IP addresses are on same subnet (you've done).
Check ipconfig/ifconfig on both machines for settings.
Ping 'localhost' and local IP on both machines to check.
Ping remote IP address, not name.
At this basic level, if the windows box can't see the linux box, I'd suspect a fundamental config error, or a fault with network card or cable.
I'm assuming no filtering or security on either machine.
Hope this helps.

Yep. there is something stange. We network Linux and W2K servers all day (with crossover cables) and have never had anything like this come up. Hum....
