View Full Version : Setting sub domain with tera-byte control panel

What is the process?

The problem that I am having is that the raq will not let me set the sub-domain account. It is telling me that I already have a domain registered under that name.

I thought it was just a matter of using a different IP address and changing the host name. I guess that is not the case. What am I doing wrong?

Hello!!!

The problem that I am having is that the raq will not let me set the sub-domain account. It is telling me that I already have a domain registered under that name.

Well, I'm not entirely sure what you mean by this. Maybe rather than figure it out, it would be easier just to tell you what to do.

On the server itself:
Create new virtual site > subdomain.domain.com
(I'm assuming this is a domain you own and have entered in tera-dns already as domain.com)

Use whatever IP you want, it can be one you already have used for the main domain, the server IP, or a unique one. That doesn't really matter in terms of creation of a subdomain. Choose the IP that makes sense in this situation.

Now you have the subdomain created on the server with whatever IP you've chosen.

Go to tera-dns.
Go to the domain that this subdomain is based off of (modify).
Add an A RECORD: subdomain (as in subdomain.domain.com) pointing to the same IP you used when you set up the site on the server. Wait (patience grasshopper), it might take a few hours to a day to work, possibly even longer.

Bingo.

Here's a tip for subdomains:
When you set up a domain, try to decide what IP address you'll be using for subdomains. You might use the same IP as the domain itself, or the server IP, or a special subdomain IP. This will only work if you can pick an IP.

Now that you've decided your future subdomain(s)' IP, set 'forward non-matching to...' -the IP address (this is when setting up the main domain on tera-dns).

You've just wildcarded the domain and now you'll be able to set up subdomains 'on the fly' so to speak on the server with that same IP address and it will work instantly.

Even if you decide that you want to set up a subdomain on a different IP, you can set up an A RECORD (as I described above), with that IP, and set up the subdomain on the server with that IP, and you'll just have to wait a bit until it works.

Anyway, like I said, I don't entirely understand the problem you are having so if this doesn't address it, lemme know.

Ohhh, and please don't bump posts, I or someone will get to you ASAP.

Well I just tried this and I got the error message below.

"Another site is already aliased to the domain mydomain.com"

What is the problem? I already have the domain that was previously set up on the server, but it will not let me add the sub domain is one.

Help!

Ok, now getting the idea. please tell me the following:

What is the subdomain you are attempting to add to the domain?
In the site's settings (on the server), what are the web aliases listed?
Also, is this a RaQ3 or 4?

Chicken,

This is on a Raq 3.

The subdomain that I am trying to add is called "forums". To go directly to a message board. (forums.mydomain.com)

In the site's settings (on the server), what are the web aliases listed?

Pardon my ignorance, but I saw nothing in the site settings that gave this information. As far as I know, there are no other aliases.

Add it as a new vdomain

Instead of "www" in "hostname" type your subdomain name.

So you have : hostname : forums
Domain name : whateveryourdomainis.com

Easy. Very easy

Ok, RaQ3's only have a checkbox, if it was a RaQ4, you might have done something that would have caused your error (not possible on RaQ3 however). So that's not it...

Try what horoscope said.

Sorry. Unchecking "accept email for domain" and "Web Access by domain" will solve the problem.

I completely forgot that bit. Had the same problem as you for quite some time so I know how frustrating it is.

Hope that helps,

Monty.

As you can see, Monty had the same problem, and if I'm not mistaken, that confused me when I first got it too. Don't worry about it (and be thankful it was just a simple error).

Some of the questions posted are so confusing that I have no idea what people are even talking about, let alone how to solve the problem :D

I'm not sure if they've made it less confusing with the 4r's. Instead of a check box, you type in the entry, such as 'domain.com' - in case you ever survive your 3 and get one of those, heh.
