Some guy wants to colocate with me, but he's not sure if his case is a 1u or a 2u. His measurment for height is 21 x 16 " and 3 1/2 " high what would that be considered?

I think that 3.5 high is 2u, if 1.75 inches is 1u (I could be wrong, just going off of memory).

It is 2u - http://www.rack-mount.com/2u.html . Aren't racks usually 19", not 21"?

That needs to go in to a 21" rack and this is not the same as the 19" rack that you'll find in most colo facilities.

so it won't fit on my rack? He says it might be 19 he doesn't have exact measurements. Says he used to host at ttlhost too until they shut down.

He might be counting the 2 extra inches for mounting brackets?

no. If you count that mounting bracket, it's 19" or 23"

My guess is this is not even rackmountable.

21inch sounds like a 19inch rack case + the mounting ears - making it 21.

just put it there sideways.

1u = usually 17'' wide * 1.75'' tall, usually about 24'' deep but depends on your cabinets
if his usint is 21'' wide you'll need a 24'' wide rack not a 19'' wide rack- appx 800*800 external dimensions

1u is not a measure of width and depth. It's only a measure of height.

There are 19" and 23" (standard telco) rackmounts. This is the measure of width, either 19" or 23" (the distance between the holes in the mounting brackets). You will either need to use 19" or 23" rails to put these 19" or 23" rackmount on your cabinet. As you said, 19" rackmount is actually around 17" wide.

Either way, the dimension given above won't fit any description of standard rackmountable unit (19" or 23").

It's called learning ... How do you know that he doesn't have somebody else that takes care of colo? You don't, so don't try to bash.

"... Hi, I would like to co-locate a server in one of your racks..."

"Ok, how many U's will you be needing?"

"How manu U's are in a Full tower case?"

No that's completely different. Also, this isn't a place to bash somebody. So just quit it.

and the answer is (usually)

11u, but we think rather than have a 1/4 rack all of your own, that you'd save money rehousing it in a smaller box - i can fwd your details onto our rackmount server manufacturer who woudl be happy to quote for the job is you'd like ...

Its not about bashing.

Its hard to have confidence in anyone who runs a colo house that doesnt know the size of a U.

If you cant figure that out (search google feeling lucky?), how are you ever going to provide a decent service?

Thats basic, basic, basic knowledge.

Good luck trying to get apache going, mysql, run a network, etc if you dont even know how big one U is.

Its like graduating high school then trying to apply to med school with no training inbetween....

agreed. It's not so bad not knowing exactly how tall a U is, but to not be able to find an answer to that question with (all the resources on the internet) - 1 before asking here is.

I don't do the colocation, I have a server administrator that takes care of hardware and stuff on our rack. Basically a client asked me if he could colocate his server and I asked him how many "U" it was, he said he didn't know so measured it, and I posted the measurement to me which is what I was asking you guys.
