Well, since I am still inside my 30-day money back guarantee time, I thought I would see if I can take advantage of it - so I called billing. Funny - you get through immediately if they think you want to give them money!!

Anyway - I told the nice lady that I wanted to cancel my account and get my money back. First thing she says is "You need to go to cancel.*****.com"

LOL!!! I said - your entire website has been down for days - so I can't do it online. She is supposed to be faxing me paperwork - well see.

I just wanted to know if anyone has had trouble leaving them and getting your money returned to you?

Now, on to the search of another hosting company.......

Well, welcome to the world of C I SH*T...In their world the words 'REFUND' and 'CANCEL' do not exist. Really, the only way to cancel or get a refund is to CANCEL the credit card you used to order the account.

Ugh...the saga continues...

Use the search function at the top of the fourm and type in co. name.
Im sure tons of posts will result.
A sure way though would be to follow B-Brokers advice :D

First, I will see if they actually fax me the information - THEN I will get dirty and cancel the credit card.

I have done lots of searches and found LOTS of info on ***** on these message boards - much of which only reinforced my decision to cancel with them while I can.

Thanks for the help - ill let ya know how it goes

guess i need to vent somewhere....
I just called back to verify that the fax form was coming -

this lady was surprised I was getting a form faxed to me. Asked me if I couldnt get it online. I had to tell her too that her website was down!!

she said "all of our other customers can get to our site just fine. It depends what connection you are coming from"

What does that mean?? when i asked, of course she couldnt tell me. I told her if she knew of a way I could get to the site, I would love to.

I said "well, there are hundreds of people out there that cant get to your website or their domains hosted by you" - she seemed shocked and again told me that it must be the connection I am coming from because EVERYONE else can get to it just fine!

Really? can you all get to *****.com? It MUST be my imagination! :)

Stacy

PS: Hmmmmmmmmmmm - maybe it DOES depend on my connection - very weird but I just dialed in through my other ISP account, and suddenly I can get to their site. Coinsedence?? Or should I eat Crow????

*****.com is down for me, it has been all night. Maybe this is their way of grabbing people's money and running. You should do a chargeback for everything ***** has charged you for this month because they have not provided the services. You should also block all charges coming from *****, they like to make random charges to people's credit cards.

I hand to cancel three domains this weekend. Make absolutley sure you do this and receive an email from them cancelling your account.

Please print this. You must submit this form to cancel your account. If we do not receive this form via fax you will continue to be billed and you will be responsible for the charges. You also need to submit either a credit card or a online check to pay for your final bill. We will not cancel your account and release your domain if your account has an unpaid balance.

If you are making payment by check please mail the check to:

*****
1851 Central Drive #110
Bedford, Texas 76021

You may fax us a copy of the check completely filled out and this can be accepted as payment. See fax numbers below.

Fax Numbers:
United States - 800-3924801
International - 817-399-0906

***** Cancellation Authorization

Address:__________________________________________
City:__________________________ State:______________
Zip Code:___________________________

Credit Card #_____________________________________
Expiration Date: ___________
Credit Card Type: [ ] Mastercard - [ ] Visa - [ ] American Express
Domain Name: ___________________

I authorize ***** to deduct from the credit card above my final bill for my service as outlined in my original order form for the above domain. In the event that this charge is contested by myself or charged back to *****, I agree that I am responsible for any charges incurred by ***** in defending authorization. I also agree to pay the 5% fee associated with the chargeback should it occur. I also understand that if I am cancelling within the first 30 days of my contract, the startups are still non-refundable, but no hosting fees will be charged to me for service rendered in the first 30 days of my contract. If I am cancelling after the first 30 days, I am responsible for all charges incurred.

I don't think ***** will refund the startup cost, which is like double the monthly cost.

Also interesting to note...that although their plans call for Unlimited Bandwidth...they will actually chargeyou massivly if you go over 1 Gigabyte/day.

Don't even get me started about their dedicated servers...

Best bet, dispute the credit card charge with your credit card company. ***** is to stupid to figure out how to reply..and you win by default..( I've dont it several times )

I got the form and it is all ready to be faxed. I did however, make a couple revisions - I stated that I DO NOT authorize them to charge my credit card anymore because there should not be a final bill since I am still in the 30 day period. Will fax it first thing in the morning - dont have a fax at home, so I need hubby to fax it from work.

Thanks so much for all your help!

And don't wait to do something about the card. Report it lost (lost to ***** if you don't act soon) and they will issue a new number, locking ***** out. When I quit and after I received acknowledgement they still tried to charge my card about 12 times, each time for an amount more than my normal payment and increasing. I received notice each time my card failed. They never replied to my emails asking them what they were doing and why. (They are big on termination charges). Lucky for me I had reported my card lost beforehand.

For emphasis (because I went through a lot of stress with them):
Don't think telling them not to charge your card means anything. Of course, you could get lucky. They are inefficient and could overlook the abuse oppotunity, but don't count on it.

They may have a new attitude. Be sure to let us know how it comes out. After a couple hundred good reports I will relax my vigil.

I left ***** about 1 year ago, and it was pretty simple - I called in and told them their service sucked donkey balls, and that I wanted my account cancelled, and my money refunded. The lady on the phone was about the most pleasent person I had talked to, she had to fax me some paperwork.. somthing like this

--------------------------------------------------------------
I authorize ***** to deduct from the credit card above my final bill for my service as outlined in my original order form for the above domain. but i crossed out a whole bunch of stuff in the thing. :D I crossed out basically anything that said i owed them something if I cancelled.. and it worked fine.

In fact, they called me a week after i left, and offered me a bigger package for less money, and 3 months free. I was surprised, but basically told them to go

Good luck
Nick

You don't want to cancel your credit card to eliminate the problem. Try doing a Chargeback. Most credit card companies do this and this is where the CC company refunds you and then charges ***** for the money they sent you back. Cancelling your credit card won't do what you think. You will still get the bill. I had a $40 charge on a credit card and cancelled the card. I still got the bill more than six months later.

Any experience with cancelling a one-year plan with them? I still have 4 months to go. :(

Also, you may run into problems receiving your refund if your card is cancelled and the numbers are changed. In order for them refund the order, they will need valid numbers. I'm sure you wouldn't want to give them your new numbers as that would defeat the purpose of getting everything changed in the first place. :D

Ohhh and Stacy, WELCOME TO WHT!

I agree with Chicken!

I'm about to get away from this horrible joke "host" ever since they took my server down for their "Code Red Updates"...All they've actually done is blocked the GOOD traffic when in reality Code Red is STILL infiltrating my server! (it's a Win2k box)

BTW-My linux boxes are down too! They're all corrupt and C I "Host" has done NOTHING to fix them!

What a joke this "company" is...

Im using my check card - we use that for almost everything so that its like paying cash - so i cant really do a chargeback, but I can dispute it. Im watching my bank account like a hawk for new charges and if I need to, I will get them to put a stop on the charges on that card and issue me a new one. But im hoping to get the refund first.

Ill let ya know what happens after I fax them the cancellation form tomorrow morning.

And Chicken - thanks for the welcome - nice to be here!

I used to use a Check Card as well and I stopped after finding out my bank wouldn't do anything to a online company that charged me for services and never delivered them. I was only able to get my money back by basically bothering that company until they gave in. I was told by my bank that because it was a Check Card, it is basically the same as writing a check. When you write a check, you are automatically authorizing it as valid. I haven't heard of any banks, in my area anyway, that will fight for you with a Check Card. I highly recommend not using Check Cards for anything on the Internet.

Good luck, however, you deserve to be refunded.

To your question if anyone's leaving ... the answer is an emphatic YES. Not that'll do them that much harm, but I am taking 4 websites/domains with me elsewhere. Even today, access is slow, and buggy.

Here is our approach.

Step 1a - find a webhost that has the features we need
Step 1b - ask questions
Step 1c - make sure you have everything in order with NIC

Step 2 - backup data ... via telnet it's easy:

(if you have a database)
mysqldump --opt -u[SERNAME] -p[ASSWORD] [DATABASE] > [DUMPFILENAME].sql

tar -zcvf MYSITE.tar.gz [dir1] [dir2] ... [dirn]

Step 3 - sign up for the new host, await access

STep 4 - create a MySQL database (if you use one), assign a user account to new database (make sure you do this )

Step 5 - telnet into new site and ftp into *****ed site from new site ... use IP numbers

Step 6 - unload data via telnet

tar -zxvf MYSITE.tar.gz

mysql -u[SERNAME] -p[ASSWORD] [DATABASE] < [DUMPFILENAME].sql

Step 7 - wait for DNS to resolve

STep 8 - monstercontrol into *****ed site and kill all e-mail fowarding lists and listbots

Kill off any sensitive data

Step 9 - Cancel Account
Make sure you FAX your cancellation form

We're 2 hours into having our new site and are already at STEP 7 !-)

Pretty nifty, eh ?

That is wierd. I use my check card all the time and I have done a few chargebacks when it has had to do with online purchase. I did one a few years ago and I just finished another one this month. No problems both times. But it was with the same bank.

It must be different with each bank. Either way I plan on changing banks real soon anyway. For other reasons but knowing that some banks will fight for you I will make that something to look for when searching.

Thanks...
