I need your help with some very important research. You see, I am a 31 year old male, and I have been known to nap. That's right, many an afternoon I put my head down and sleep for 10 minutes, 15 minutes or a half hour. Sometimes, particularly on the weekends, longer. My girlfriend thinks this is symptomatic of being a lazy slacker. I think a well timed nap aides in productivity and creativity, especially as I only sleep five or six hours most nights.

Am I a slacker or simply maximizing productivity? What's your position on naps?

10-15 minute naps are not healthy, I remember my friend neurologist told me that. I didn't ask for details, but based on my own experience, these naps just breaks your day, while a human needs only one good sleep every 24 hours.

Short naps of 20 - 30 minutes allow the brain to produce theta waves that rejuvenate the neurons. A good night's sleep is nice but naps (or powernaps) are very useful.

I would take one, if I could.

i always call those power naps.. i dont really see anything wrong with them. But if you do it on a daily basis, maybe theres an underlying problem? Or its just a habit you've gotten into.

Itry to take one everyday after lunch. I usually sneak in 1/2 hour. Don't always nap but I do lay with me eyes closeed and listen to the radio.

Waste of time. I would go for the regular good sleep.

Theta waves! I knew it! I'm always saying I need more theta waves. ;)

I would say my napping has to do with not sleeping enough at night, but I remember napping (but maybe less often) in my early and mid twenties when I used to get a solid 8 hours most nights.

LOL, Brendan, remembering those days from High School where you're passed out on the desk?

Naps are good. During the school year I average atleast 3 per day. Sometimes upwards of 5. All depends on what we're doing in what class.

Are these voluntary naps?

Otherwise you may have sleep apnea...

I think sleep apnea is when you stop breathing at times while sleeping. Narcolepsy will make you just drop off to sleep without planning to sleep.

I think naps can be a very good thing. In fact, I've read about studies where they have shown that a short nap (under 30 minutes) every day is good for you. I take a nap once in a while, depends on the day and how I feel. I don't see anything wrong with it.

Hiccups,
I was refering to sleep apnea because a side effect is that you'll have a heck of a hard time staying awake during your work day.

While I don't nap everyday, I am finding that lately I nap almost every day there's an opportunity.

Many famous people from Einstein to New York City's former mayor Ed Koch have been famous for their "power naps." I would take one if the phone would just stop ringing...

I never have naps if I can help it - I *always* wake up feeling horrible and have to have a shower.

I have been known to fall asleep involuntarily at my desk though :)

Well, it looks like pro nappers are winning 3 to 1. So I guess I shouldn't feel too guilty if I curl up again this afternoon for a few minutes rest.
