View Full Version : advice please
eilersdesign 08-06-2001, 06:03 PM Hi, My name is Steve Eilers. I am a web designer for TechnoTrue.com. Anyways we recently made a web site for some one, but they had seconds thoughts. I am wondering if my fellow web designers could please tell me the approximate value of the design.
A screen shot of the design is at www.technotrue.com/screen.gif (http://www.technotrue.com/screen.gif)
Anyways, I know it is not the best design in the world, but I am just interested on what people are willing to pay for something like this.
Please let me know and thank you for your time.
By the way, if you want this web site or a custom web site, my web design company is www.technotrue.com.
Sincerely,
Steve Eilers
DesignUser 08-06-2001, 07:10 PM Dear Steve Eilers:
It is unfortunate for me to mention this, but I need to...the public needs to know. Your designs are very insufficient and lacking in many ways possible. The truth about your webdesign "company" has been posted on these boards numerous times before.
Your "technotrue" website are 100% designed from Microsoft Frontpage 2000 templates. Even in no attempt to hide it, you keep the Microsoft Frontpage 2000 template source code (Meta tags) in the HTML source of every single site you "claim to design."
Your portfolio is made of nothing except sites made from Frontpage 2000 templates. Also this new site that your client dropped was also created from a Frontpage 2000 template. The clipart used is also available from Frontpage.
Please do not deny this, one of the websites you have designed, sharpshades.com STILL have the Frontpage 2000 templates meta code in it. Here is a copy and paste below:
<meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=iso-8859-1">
<meta name="resource-type" content="document">
<meta name="generator" content="Microsoft FrontPage 4.0">
<meta http-equiv="pragma" content="no-cache">
<meta name="revisit-after" content="15 Days">
<meta name="classification" content="Consumer">
<meta name="description" content="SharpShades.com is the #1 web site for Oakley sunglasses! ">
<meta name="keywords" content="oakley sun glasses">
<meta name="robots" content="ALL">
<meta name="distribution" content="GLOBAL">
<meta name="rating" content="General">
<meta name="copyright" content="Copyright 2001 Sharp Shades.com">
<meta name="author" content="TechnoTrue.com">
<meta http-equiv="reply-to" content="support@sharpshades.com">
<meta name="language" content="English">
<meta name="doc-type" content="Web Page">
<meta name="doc-class" content="Published">
<meta name="doc-rights" content="Public Domain">
Also, in your "prices" section, you list the following:
Unlimited Graphics & Text
Professional Logo
1 Static Banner
1 Flash Banner
What kind of professional web design company would offer Unlimited Graphics? And how come I have a limit of ONE static banner? Don't I have unlimited graphics to choose from?
Please re-organize your webdesign "company". The work is lacking in many ways. This is just constructive criticism, please do not take it as a flame. Consider this message helpful and a warning so you do not lose another client.
Thanks
gitaarwerk.net 08-06-2001, 07:10 PM Erm..
I know what some people pay for simple designs.. and they would already pay 1000$
<<EDIT>>
eilersdesign 08-06-2001, 07:34 PM Design User, what you just stated is totally NOT TRUE.
1st of all, MY WEB SITES I MAKE ARE NOT FRONTPAGE TEMPLATES. THEY ARE 100% DESIGNED BY ME. I DO USE FRONTPAGE TO EDIT HTML and FOR WINDOWS CLIPART. I ADMIT THAT I USE WINDOWS CLIP ART, BUT ALL MY WEB SITES I MAKE ARE NOT FRONTPAGE TEMPLATES. YOU ARE 100% MISTAKEN.
ALSO, if you want to mock my web design packages, you should read closer where I put "for a custom package, contact us for a quote".
WHT Users, Please understand that this "DesignUSer" Is VERY mistaken and has no clue what he is talking about. He is simply trying to lower my business.
Please remember this. My websites are NOT frontpage templates. If they were frontpage templates, I am pretty sure they would be illegal to sell.
eilersdesign 08-06-2001, 07:39 PM MY DESIGNS ARE NOT FRONTPAGE TEMPLATES. DO NOT SAY FALSE INFO ABOUT MY COMPANY. YOU ARE 100% WRONG.
splatwd 08-06-2001, 08:01 PM looks good
75 bucks
delemtri 08-06-2001, 08:06 PM I like the screen.gif design. Don't judge DesignUser too harshly, they may have just wanted to help.
I don't think $1000 is reasonable, but of course it differs based on the user. I'm not a very good judge though, consdering I've only made $50 from web development and that was for a PHP job. :)
Good luck!
seattlite 08-06-2001, 08:07 PM Sorry to say, but not much. 50 bucks or so. In the past year I have come to really appreciate just WHY some people charge so much per hour. A site like this would take a $50 per hour designer less than an hour in actual design time. On the other hand a site like this could take a lesser designer 5-10 hours of trying different looks etc.
This is constructive criticism even if it is knowingly harsh.
Barak 08-06-2001, 08:23 PM All this criticism could make a guy wary about posting his designs ;)
<<EDIT>>
bombino 08-06-2001, 11:06 PM Yeah... I always use $45 an hour as a good estimate. You could say that that site took 2-3 hours to make, so I'd say ~$100.
The Laughing Cow 08-07-2001, 10:41 AM I think that designuser was very polite about the matter and brought it up nicely. whether its true or not he/she was making a suggestion. Im sure noone here would like the industry to be full of sharks and con-artists.

I agree completely. Even if a site isn't a frontpage template, if it looks like one that's just as bad.
As a professional designer you should be able to provide your clients with something significantly better than they could do themselves with frontpage and a "for dummies" book.
Eilersdesign -- It's really the header graphic that is bringing this whole site down -- I'd price it at about $50.
<<EDIT>>
My two cents...
Chicken 08-11-2001, 01:30 PM My intention was to split the thread (based on a request), but in looking at the thread there were all sorts of posts out of place. I decided to remove all of the, "Check my site..." posts and replies concerning them.
This is not the web design review forum. A question was asked. *Please* reply to the question only and if you want a review, start a thread at the Reviews Forum (one site to be reviewed per thread). Makes it less confusing for everyone.
