View Full Version : Rackshack: can they be serious?

Over the past couple of days, I've been looking at potentially getting a dedicated server, nothing too serious but a starting block like a Cobalt system.

The one name that keeps arising is "RackShack", and up until now, all the posts in this forum about them have been pretty reasonable if a little skeptical about their bandwidth allowance on their 'special' RaQ4i...

They've just 'upgraded' their special offer... and increased the transfer allowance from 175gb/m to 300gb! Can they actually be serious about this? Even if the server's connectivity isn't burstable, this makes for some serious bandwidth (my calcs come out at 800kbps, or about that roughly, haven't done any hard figures - brain too weak ;)).

While $99/month is alot of money to go spending (esp.with a $250 setup) it seems nowhere near enough for this, considering the 'ballpark figures' provided by most other companies.

I did email them earlier about the 175gb and whether it was burstable or not... no reply as yet, but still, this is highly intriguing.

Any advice that could be passed on would be exceptionally well appreciated right now!! :D

Much confused,
Wes.

Rackshack uses a setup someone different than other dedicated server companies. Unlike other companies which lease lines or rent lines from other companies, Rackshack uses the ISP lines from their parent company EV1. The thing is that instead of sharing the lines with the dialup and DSL accounts, they leech unused bandwidth from them. Since Northpoint went bankrupt, EV1 has stopped the sale of DSL, which added more unused bandwidth. All that unused bandwidth is probably becoming a burdon on EV1. So to compensate, they are probably allowing Rackshack to give more bandwidth away. This way they keep their cost-to-bandwidth consumption even.

Thanks for the food for thought :)
