Does anyone have any experience with Burton Hosting Dedicated servers? Their Dual Xeon looks tempting so I was just looking for some input. Also, they are in Atlanta right? Thanks

I'd be inclined to go straight to the source, rather than through a reseller... BlackAng 08-11-2003, 05:44 PM I recently was with Burton Hosting. I would like to say that, they are very flexible with the plans and if you need something extra, they will try to do whatever to help you. Also I would also like to say that out of all the Data Centers/Resellers I've been to (4) they are the first ones that have properly installed FreeBSD with the exact options I specified. It was absolutely amazing and I was really impressed. Also the hardware was all intact on the first install, no need to swap cables because stuff was running in UDMA33, or some ram was missing, wrong HD size, everything that was promised was there exactly. I applaud them for this also. The network is great too, other than a couple hours that it was unbearably slow, however we never lost connection while we were with them. Also I think their tech support does not sleep because I have emailed them at all hours and always got a response in 5 minutes or less, that was also a positive. However, we recently had to leave them due to the fact that they provide an MRTG, that shows the traffic that has been used, and don't use that for billing. Now I don't want to open this up cause it's a can of worms and I don't want to flame or anything but this is what happened. They poll the Switch which apparently showed a significant amount more of traffic than the MRTG did at the end of the month and tried to bill us for this. We have 2 other traffic monitoring tools, mrtg, and a ip accounting program that logs all traffic. Now all of the monitoring software, and their own MRTG tool, showed we had done less than our monthly allotment however, their switch reported otherwise and provided no proof of this number. So they billed us, we didn't pay, and we lost the server. Now I would just like to say they are adding a disclaimer for this to their AUP/TOS so if you are deciding to go with them and push alot of traffic, be sure to straighten it out with them whatever issues you have. I would also like to say that I was so pleased with everything else, that if we weren't 100% sure we didn't go over or even had 1% of doubt, I would have paid the extra money just to keep the server there because I was so happy with the service. But alas, we decided that the correct course of action was to not pay this since we had not gone over and move on. Hope it helps! BhAaD 08-11-2003, 05:57 PM Where are they located? BlackAng 08-11-2003, 05:59 PM In ATL Jeffbg123 08-11-2003, 08:19 PM They have a nice Dual 2.4 Xeon deal for $295 with CPanel that is very tempting BlackAng 08-11-2003, 08:23 PM So then why don't you get it? :D BhAaD 08-11-2003, 08:23 PM yep :) PS: my "yep :)" was the reply to the nice deal... wubwob 08-11-2003, 08:29 PM BlackAng - nice to see you champion there services even though you had a misunderstanding! We need more customers like you! All to often on this board we have people ranting and raving over 1 mishap - they forget about all the good stuff :) sailor 08-11-2003, 08:56 PM I also appreciate blackang's balanced approach. some point of view from the provider side - we actually poll the switches every 5 minutes from our mrtg machine and store the results in a database. that makes up our mrtg graphs. at the end of each month at 1200 am we run a program which pulls the actual stats from the database for billing. we feel that using the actual data from the database is most accurate. we also have an extranet which pulls stats every now and then from our mrtg data base - not on a 5 minute interval. it presents them to the outside in a secure format that does not allow the customers or competitors to see all our graphs. unfortunately - if that box goes down - the stats it has are not always exactly matching the mrtg data base which is the foundation of the data. well las t month that box went down for half day. apparently it was presenting stats slightly low. however if you look at the actual mrtg web page - you would see the real stats and if you pull the mrtg datbase like our billing program does you would get the finite impircal data. we had a disagreement with the customer that they did not want to pay the 80 in overage and I understand their position. It appears they understand ours too. so it really is no hard feelings - its just one of those where 2 principles did not work out. they said they were not paying and we terminated their box ( gave them notice and allowed them time to move data and make other arrangments). any way - thats about it. BlackAng 08-11-2003, 09:24 PM I still feel you should provide the data for the client to see how much they are doing, as it helps them throttle their usage if they are on a path to go over or not. Having a MRTG graph that shows the incorrect usage or has no relevance on what the actual usage the user has utilized is rather misleading. sailor 08-11-2003, 09:36 PM we do our best on that. I think the graph was about 95 megs off. sometimes we have issues on downed servers - howeever not often thankfully. this is the only time I ever have had this issue and lost a customer. we are sorry to see you go actually. BlackAng 08-11-2003, 10:03 PM 95MB is understandable, 76GB is not. Perhaps in the future if you ever decide to make the real usage (the one you use for billing) available, we'll get another server as everything else was impecable! Jeffbg123 08-11-2003, 10:09 PM So, how about Burton Host......is it true that they are in the TranxActglobal/DV2 or whatever datacenter in Atlanta? They answer is yes btw. Jeffbg123 08-11-2003, 11:25 PM The question was if Burton Host had servers in the TranxActGlobal datacenter. I do not see that answer on the site. sailor 08-12-2003, 01:05 AM Originally posted by Jeffbg123 The question was if Burton Host had servers in the TranxActGlobal datacenter.
