I've had big banners in a free national tech trading paper before. There were a couple of signups, but not enough to justify the cost.

Then I tried the state daily newspaper. A small section. That managed to gather a number of signups as well.

All in all a mixed bag. This was done in Australia.

Give it a go if your budget allows you to, you maybe a better marketer than I am. :)
