Hi Folks,

Ok, i was wanting to setup a new dns service but thought i would need a dedicated server todo that. i might be wrong i may just need some scripts todo this.

Well i want to focus my efforts on creating a redirection service and free domain parking. Can anyone suggest any good redirection scripts i've been looking at a few and it seems easy enough to setup and customise to how i wish it to be.

But domain parking what would i need todo that. Guessing a dedicated server?.

Well it depends on how much you want to do.

DNS is required if you want to change mail records/point the email elsewhere and so forth.

A script will redirect a domain to another site yes if its pointed to the correct IP to the redirection script, however, you still have to have some type of DNS to redirect the domain to that IP address.

The redirection scripts your thinking of are designed to work better with subdomains instead of domains.

In order to start offering that kind of server, you should definitely get a dedicated server. The scripts that would be used to redirect a web site can be run in a virtual server environment, but if your service becomes popular, CPU usage could become a problem with your provider.

Technical issues aside, you should put a lot of thought into what you would offer before you run into the business. Servers are very expensive to setup and operate. You should consider how you would make the money required to pay all of your costs (and then hopefully make a little profit). Make sure you know what you are going to offer ahead of time. For instance, why should someone use your service instead of the service of company A, B, C, D, or E or free service X, Y, and Z?

Planning is key to setting up any service.
