View Full Version : Best Domain Name Registrar to transfer to?
Archilea 08-05-2001, 10:08 AM I am up for renewal of a couple of domain names, and my current registrar wants to charge $39.95 each to do it. Since these are not commercial ventures, I don't want to dpend this much on them, and I was wondering which registrar people use for personal / special interest domains...
I am leaning toward godaddy right now, but that's the only one that I have heard anything about.
I'm looking for alternates. Just give me the URL if you're in a hurry, and I'll do the footwork.
Thanks,
Desi
RotoHost 08-05-2001, 10:29 AM Hi,
We've had good experiences with OpenSRS. A few excellent resellers are:
www.weblaunching.net - $12 per year
www.bottomdollardomains.com - $12 per year
www.000domains.com - $13.50 per year
You won't go wrong with either of these. :)
host4student 08-05-2001, 11:06 AM go for goddady. I have 3 domains with them. It cheaps and you get fully control of your domain.
Lightspeed 08-06-2001, 11:11 PM Go with godaddy. I have registered my last 10 domains with them. 10x$8.95 = $89.50 ... Back when my grandpa was a kid and had to walk uphill to school (both ways) in the blizzarding snow people used to pay $35.00 each. 10x$35.00 = $350.00 (ouch). Poor grandpa!
Oh, yeah... I actually had to contact godaddy for support on transfering a domain from NSI. I sent an e-mail in the a.m. and my problem was resolved in the p.m. Same day!

I haven't had any problems with stargateinc.com
$10 per domain

Synergy 08-07-2001, 12:58 AM I have
3 Domains at www.dotster.com ($15.00)
1 Domain at www.godaddy.com ($8.75)
Both very good service and I'd like to do business with both of them :)
SoftWareRevue 08-07-2001, 04:53 AM I prefer both stargate and godaddy.
Although I like stargate's control panel features slightly better.
JBIZ718 08-07-2001, 05:04 AM Go with Godaddy,
Ask them whos there daddy also

Wassa matter with stargate??
One thing I like about stargate is they offer a few things for free that godaddy charges for.
i.e. domain forwarding and a few email accounts to help get you started.
Just my views.
I think godaddy has better support though;)
Jodi K. 08-07-2001, 09:48 AM Hi Archilea. I've actually had really good experiences with Dotster (http://www.dotster.com/) and have two personal domains with them. I transferred those from Network Solutions for about $12 at the time (and they may still have the same offer on now, I don't know - that included an extra year on top of the time I'd already paid for with Network Solutions). The process was very simple and they have an excellent and very intuitive interface to keep track of things once you've made the transfer. The difference between paying $15 and $35 / year, is quite substantial for someone who isn't making a living from the sites they have registered, so I definitely sympathize with your plight!
If offering domain names YOURSELF through your non-commercial web site as a sort of "affiliate" program would interest you, they also have an excellent program for that, too.
You can check here: http://ir.dotster.com/home/ for more information on that.
Best of luck to you!

newedge 08-07-2001, 11:06 AM One interesting feature offered by NAMESDIRECT.COM is the ability to create a log in and password for your technical contact. That way your technical contact can change his information in the record as well as name server information. This is a great idea. Plus they also are under $15, so paying an $6 a year for this feature might be worth it for your clients if you are a reseller or webmaster.
Otherwise stick with goDaddy
TheOp 08-07-2001, 02:30 PM I like stargateinc.com, $8.00 transfers.
checkall 08-07-2001, 03:08 PM Stargateinc.com's registration service is good. $8.00 each if register two domains a time.
But its reseller pragram is poor. Forget it if you want to resell domains.
slade 08-07-2001, 07:52 PM I must also vote for www.dotster.com, I have several domains there, and they have a decent control panel. Also, transfer special 11.95
Archilea 08-07-2001, 10:57 PM Thanks to all that replied. I ended up going with GoDaddy when it was said and done, and they took care of everything quite nicely. I have archived this thread for future use, just in case the subject comes up again.
An interesting note is that my losing registrar sent me a confirmation email for the transfer, and in it they had a "Special" rate of $12.00/year. Too little, too late, IMHO. If they were willing to gouge me with their high price right up until I finally made the switch, they have lost any loyalty that I would have given them.
Since I'm not reselling, I didn't have to consider that option , but thanks for the input just the same.
Take care,
Archilea

Just to be clear, it's $8.00 only for the first year, $10 for each year after...

May I ask why is it a poor reseller service, I was thinking of going with them...
SoftWareRevue 08-08-2001, 01:45 AM Yes, it appeared as a good deal to me as well:eek:

Still a good deal...
OneNetDesign 08-08-2001, 11:51 AM I would reccomend http://www.namecheap.com . I have about 4 domains (bought one this morning), great service.
namecheap.com - $8.88
eddie 08-08-2001, 07:08 PM This is what I read at their namecheap.com site:
Presently, Domain Names are registered for $8.88 each.
You can also transfer domains
to Namecheap from other registrars for just $8.88 each. Please note
that these prices are subject to change without notice.
Wassercrats 08-08-2001, 09:55 PM The current edition of On magazine mentions the "best" registrar, but I forgot to remember it. I'll try again for tomorrow. I don't trust them though.
Wassercrats 08-09-2001, 04:18 PM Here is that quote from ON magazine:
"Register your own domain name--lots of sites can take care of this, but Catalog.com is the best--for $35 a year, you get great Web hosting and e-mail service".
checkall 08-09-2001, 05:10 PM If you like to pay $35, instead of something below $10, a year for a domain, that's fine. Go ahead!
I don't thank that a registrar who charges $35 is better than one who charges $10.
sabas11 08-09-2001, 05:17 PM What about PowerPipe? I registered a couple through them, any good/bad about them?
