Because I think we can all benefit from this project, I wanted to inform the members that "virtualmin" the opensource virtual hosting module for Webmin is now Open Source!

I am definitely curious. There has to a lot of interest here but no responses.

Has anyone tried it?

I think that control panels are gernerally a boring topic .... hence the lack of response. Perhaps I should have posted in the general area.

I have installed it on a linux machine at home just to play with.

The interface is a bit *different*, and takes a little while to find exactly what I am looking for. That may improve if I spent more time with it.

Virtualmin was easy to install. However, it missreports a few things, such as mysql being down, when in fact it is up. The e-mail setup is odd as well. It seems to need some time to get used to it, and default security is nil. I created several accounts, FTPd in to one, and could view and alter the other virtual accounts.

Again, just a first impression. I ran out of time to keep playing with it and really figure it out much.

It has promise though for a free product.

webmin is a well developed server administration program for multiple platforms (bsd, linux).

It has been around for years and is a project with allot of active development. Currently it provides modules for all major services, server operations, administrative tasks and so forth -- it is very mature and has themes for various looks and appeal.

A companion software titled usermin has the role of being a user-based control panel to manage specific features for there user account -- this is not as well developed but still consistent with the quality that webmin provides.

All-in-all webmin is the best gpl'd solution for an admin-level/user-level control panel and with constant development it keeps getting better.

It doesnt realy do anything with ftp. It assumes that you have your ftpd set up already and allowing all unix users jailed access to there home dirs.

Honestly your not going to find a more stable control panel. Virtualmin is it. Its been around for years and years, is tested and supported on a slew of platforms and the developer is a very knowladable and helpful guy.

Its a good choice. :)
