Hi,

When we eventually convert to unix (in a few months plus) I was hoping to do co-location, build a fast machine and pay a fixed month fee not varying on server spec and dump it in a co-location center.

"The scsi controller on the motherboard died and thus the server would not boot. I have replaced your motherboard with a new one and the server is once again back up."

However this has scared me, this happened to the HostInvestigator server a few hours ago and DN.net spotted the machine down, investigated, replaced motherboard and the server was backup, less than 30 minutes downtime, now that's what I call service. What the hell would I do if this happened whilst colocating, I'd have no idea what to do, how to solve the problem, who to contact and what the charges would be, being in different timezones and different countries as well, plus the time to order the part, install them etc....

I'd think we'll be sticking with DN :)

It would surely be more difficult than 30 minutes and you're ready to go. Hmmm.

It would depend on who you colocate with. Some sites actually have spares on hand and will replace the bad part with one of their own, then you simply replace the one they used.

We have just started to offer dedicated servers and co-location and where the servers are is 15 minutes from the place where they buy their computer components, so if push came to shove, we could just call the computer store in in 15 minutes your part would be sitting there ready for replacement.

Obviously all co-location/dedicated companies are not like this, so choose carefully. I assume that by DN you mean digital nation? If so, you pay dearly for that service. Go to dn.net and take a look at the prices.
