Hi folks!

Got some spare time on my hands today and doing some research for a friend in the UK.

He has had many reseller accounts but its fed up with the constant let downs, I have pointed him toward unitedhosting.co.uk but he is still insistent on getting a dedicated so that he can learn to manage them for when he becomes much bigger and needs a serious dedicated.

He is not a host or anything like that, he just runs quite a few personal sites to which he makes a little cash from donations, so he does not want a $150 P4 with 700GB bandwidth like most of us here use.

He uses between 5-8GB bandwidth per month and overall takes up 7GB space, so the requirement for a dedicated is limited.

Must be in the uk, nowhere else, and be cost effective. Why does nobody ever say price is not a problem:D

Anyway, have checked the following as reasonably priced, what do you all think and do you have any other suggestions?

The other consideration is Windows, he would prefer a windows environment as he is used to that, I always use linux and have never even tried to manage a server with windows. Would it be much easier for him than linux?

I wouldn't get a server from powerraq they are under the same group as UK2 and they are dreadful.

oneandone i emailed there support team with a simple request they weren't all that fast at answering. Infact i think it was over 72 hours not a good sign.

Whats the budget of your user?

I noticed that powerraq were part of UK2, was not so keen.

His budget is around £35-£50 per month, becuase he has seen the prices on 1 & 1 he does not really want to pay more.

Not much to work on I know, but then thats why I thought I would ask here, for some inspiration:D

Don't get a server from UK2 and OneandOne - they are bad and lack of support/technical.

Have a look at www.pobox.co.uk - have been considering them myself...

Well, if you do not need a dedicated server, then try a VDS at www.jvds.com

Their linux vds are based in the uk.

HAd considered pobox but its costly in comparison, I also found JVDS but that site was confusing enough for me to stay all of 18 seconds.

Try emailing robin at gyron.net - they are setup in Redbus III in London. I have a personal box with them and they have some pretty neat custom deals on dedicated boxes with quality UK bandwidth.

L Wisener - I just e-mailed Neil at TSN about what you are looking for. He feels if its only for personal sites then you are not looking for a right off machine - just like you mentioned. But he said he can do you something like:

AMD k6-2 300MHz

128Mb ram

8Gb disk

30Gb/m

Set-up = £20
Monthly = £43

Let me know what you think

Thanks for the info, I am looking in to these thoughts.

L Wisener,

he is still insistent on getting a dedicated so that he can learn to manage them for when he becomes much bigger and needs a serious dedicated

Why doesn't he get a decent Ensim reseller account with a host that has UK based servers? It's not that different admining an entire ENSIM box than a reseller account, so once he's ready to move on he will know the ENSIM basics...

Just a thought...

 Told him and despite mailing 1 and 1 some 13 hours ago with the simplest of questions in oder to test their response, we are still waiting and he has decided to go with them cause they are cheapest (Wonder Why?)

Given the usual talk about price vs quality and all that but still insists on going with them.

nevermind, we all have to learn and he will!

Thakns to all that provided alternatives

TSN? Is that Spanktastics new name? They are v.bad.

Ask anyone with a dedicated server with them and they will most likely tell you the same - multiple outages every month - strange reasons why - eg - power loss one day - the next its there getting dos'ed.

There are not that many companys out there selling good dedicateds in the UK - so if you find one let us know!

Do they have a contact phone number? Phone that... if thye don't then don't get a server from them as you will regret it when things go wrong.

1and1 are known for their terrible support.

1und1.de sell the servers with about 10 times more bandwith at the same price, the servers are in the same D.C. Upon phoning the UK Sales Number and asking why I couldnt buy a server from the UK division at the same price as the german site where the service was the same I was greeted with the response, The competition in the UK is alot weaker hence we can charge more.

I wouldnt recommend spanktastic or tsn, try http://www.dedipower.co.uk

May I suggest you go to www.rackspace.co.uk you can fill in a form and they get back to you on the price

RackSpace UK are a little pricey but your paying mainly for support with them aren't you?
