Is there any market for Subdomain hosting off of my domain? (http://subdomain.domain.com or http://www.domain.com/subdomain)

Also, what is the best way to give access users for such basic accounts besides FTP and is there software to monitor bandwidth/disk space like a regular hosting account? (I would not expect to offer any features (php, self installing scripts, e-mail) besides webpage hosting.)

I know that through WHM you can create an account with a sub domain instead of a domain. I dont suspect there would be much of a market for this, however you would probably pick up the "cheaper" clients if you offered everything at low prices. However, with cheaper clients there tend to arise more problems that require tech support.

The subdomains would be of a themed domain and would not just be random hosted websites.

there is also the stipulation that a subdomain is somehow "connected" at least linguistically to your main hosting site.

You can offer this if you want, but I don't see where it would greatly increase profits or really be worth it at all. However, I am not always right, the decision is yours.

For a very, very specific niche market I have in mind, I could be a working model. However, I need to monitor space and bandwdith like a normal domain on each individual subdomain and I was wondering if I could do that with a normal CPanel or Ensim Pro? (Users would not need access to their own CPanel since I am not offering anyhting but some space and bandwidth.) My goal is to use something exisiting rather than create a new back-end to do as I am thinking.

However, if anyone knows of an account/management system available to do as I am thinking, then point me in the write direction. I would be forever greatful.

Well with Cpanel at least I know that you can of course create the sub domain account as stated before. You could go the route of offering the sub domain accounts and just not give out the cpanel login to each user. This way the account would still be created and you would be able to view the statistics for each sub domain. I don't know of another way you could do that in Cpanel right off, as far as Ensim Pro I will have to check.

I can't comment on "site management systems" because our setup is all custom-built, but we offer full-featured subdomain accounts. Customers who choose these accounts get all the features of our regular hosting account but simply don't have their own domain name.

The signups are relatively rare, but we have several dozen customers who have chosen this route, often for a staging area for a dedicated server elsewhere.
