View Full Version : Looking for new raq4 hosting company!
Haisoft 08-03-2001, 04:44 PM At the moment we host our customers sites on Cobalt Raq 4 servers provided by host europe. But their bandith is too expensive. We need a service just as good as theirs with a year contract (we don't want any terms and conditions like fasthosts or donhosts ones because we can't afford to loose our account just because one of our customers had porno or hacking and we didn't see it in time !). We also want it to be in the Gb and maybe in the us.
Rakshak is no good because they have kicked clients out before.
Does anyone know of such a company?

inquisitive 08-03-2001, 04:56 PM Why don't you have a look at dialtoneinternet or pwebtech..search for these and you'll find a lot of favorable comments on these hosts
ljprevo 08-03-2001, 08:23 PM I took the plunge and signed up with Rackshack.net today, so far I can say that I am totally impressed.
Server was set up right after I ordered, I got a pleasent call from a rep.
Speed looks really good.
I have heard a few problems with tech support, so I would say, don't get one from them if you don't have any exerience running a raq.
Can't beat the price.

do your own dns
this is where they screw up big time
if you do your own dns you will be way ahead
also there dns area and all there customer area is down for around 6-8 hours a day not sure what the time change is to Texas where you are from but for me it falls in a bad time

Yes, very wise suggestion. I am doing my own DNS.
My server at rack shack is down today. Will doing my own DNS help??? But I don't think so, because even the telnet(using the IP) address fails.

if you are telneting the box and it fails this will not help
if you can telent by ip into your own box then it would
avara 08-04-2001, 07:24 AM E.Freeservers don't have many conditions, and give you lots of bandwidth. Check them out at:

when you say down what do you mean?
-internet connection to your server not working?
-the actual server down?
-server up but telnet daemon not working
The point is we cannot blame rackshack for any server management errors we make ... but if the connection is down that would be very bad (and purely rackshacks fault)

I have seen this comment over and over in this forum. I admin a server on rs.net. We use their DNS. They have never screwed anything up and it's usually done in about an hour.
I'm not sure how they could screw it up. You type the domain name in and then just check your server.
Could you post an example of how they screwed up and when it happened? Maybe the have corrected their problems.
Frank
Aloha
well no they have not corrected the problem
when they create the dns entries they have put them in wrong (spelling errors ???)
to be real scarry another messup they were not sure what to do with my account so they closed it and took my server off line ???
this was related to another one that did not get a trouble ticket on
others have had dns issues to
also you cna not ad dns 24 hours a day they shut it down for 6-8 hours a day and where I live it falls in a bad time of day
here ya go
here is 2 of there ticket system from one of there techs to another
Problem Description: 6/5/01 1:47:49 PM please re dns this customer. gb Resolution Description: 6/6/01 9:48:03 PM After some research: 1. The domain 'nethappyfishdesign.com' is not a registered domain. Please be more careful in the future. 2. The domain is not pointing to our name servers. 3. The IP assigned to his domain is 216.12.***.***not 216.40.***.***. As far as everything else, his machine is up, and the DNS is pointing. 6/7/01 10:21:36 AM the name is registered, but we have it misspelled here. it's just 'happyfishdesign.com'. closing escalation

Their DNS system is automatic...
We use our own DNS servers so I don't know much about it, but there must be another cause for the problem.

Going back to the originally person who posted this thread. I would not recommend RackShack because they will remove your server for porn or other violations. Their terms of service is very strict.
On the other hand, if you are not allowing illegal stuff on your servers, you could send an email to askmesurfer@rackshack.net and tell them that you are not allowing it and to notify you before taking down your server for violations. They do realize that you're running a business and will accomodate you that way.

then how did they decide to write up those tickets ??
why was my machine taken offline
and why has there been other people with problems
maybe cause there auto system sucks
or a human side they screw up
bottom line there dns system even if auto is not good
also there techs are not trained properly
there sytem is not reachable for 6-8 hours a day
all these things add up to the other you speak of
DO YOUR OWN DNS
Michael-MS 08-05-2001, 06:06 PM Maybe the system's changed... I have no idea. At this point I'm speculating, and you're going by past experience. Neither of which is very accurate, though you may be right. :)
If you know how to use your own DNS... there's no reason not to. :D

Aloha
well not to sound like a jerk but what you said is stupid
you are speculating ???YES so you have no experience
I am going by past experience ??? This is not accurate
sorry it is accurate experience is very accurate
also the system changed ??? DOOOHHHH
yeah this happened less than 2 months ago !!!!!!
and has not changed since then !!!!
sorry to say yes I am right
after talking to people there I have experience in this !!!
so if you are going on speculation against someone that has experience !!!!!
DUUUHHH
yes that is what I am saying use your own DNS at first becuase of there name based hosting I figured if there system worked no prob but it does not
Michael-MS 08-05-2001, 06:23 PM I don't think what I said was stupid. :D
I've helped a lot of people who host with RackShack and many of them use RackShack's DNS servers. They have not had *any* problems with the DNS servers. Therefore I am *speculating* that your problem was either due to user error or they have fixed their errors, as my experience with them only goes back 1 month.
As I said before, you may be right. There *may* be a bug in their software that still has not been fixed. I did not mean to offend you by what I said after that. Sorry.

ljprevo 08-05-2001, 06:28 PM Quite frankly I don't want to give my customer Rackshack's DNS info, I would rather give my own, looks more professional. If they had hidden nameservers, this would have been even better.
I would rather keep the DNS under my control anyways.

well sorry if it sounded bad but if your experience with rackshack goes back only 1 month you do not have to much to stand on
also glad you are helping people out
USER error was on there end
read the tickets I posted they were done by the techs there !!!
this should show you
also if you read and do searches herre and other places you will see many people have had probs with there dns and very poor support.
also a big flaw there system is down 6-8 hours a day !!!!!
you can not get to there dns sys durring this time
your people are lucky then about not having probs hope they never do
how many domains are they doing I am working with a few a week if your people are putting in one or two then being done then odds are they will never have probs
I am just saying do your own dsn to avoid this

a very good point ;)
Do I need to have two distinct IP's before i can do my own DNS?
Michael-MS 08-05-2001, 11:45 PM You can only have 1 dns server for each raq, so the answer is that you don't need 2 unique IPs. But your DNS registration will look kind of funny with only 1 dns server. :D
If you email rackshack they *might* give you an extra IP if you tell them you need it for the DNS.

That's no problem. They give me 2 additional IPs without problems (the first 8 IPs are free).
