Hi everyone,

My name is David and I am a university student from Melbourne, Australia. I've recently set up a site at http://www.1000words.net called 'A Picture's Worth'.

However, I am having problems with the fact that visitors using less than 1024x768 resolution (e.g. 800x600) are not able to view the page properly. I have never had problems before because this site's navigation is rather different as I am keen to have the photograph and the accompanying text together all the time. Would anybody have suggestions on how I can improve the site? Is my only option to make a completely different version for 800x600 users?

Thank you for your time and I look forward to hearing from you.

Cheers,
David

You might want to try cropping your menu gifs horizontally so that they will fit within the columns of your table if the resolution is 800x600.

If you had two pictures instead of three in the upper-right, you could almost fix them. Cropping the main title image a little would probably get you the space that you need. You could center or right-align the images for higher-res viewports.

You could float the main image to the left or right instead of using two TDs. This way, the image and text would fill the space instead of overflowing.

Thanks ATR, that sounds quite feasible. I'll have a go in the coming weeks and I'll post again to let you know what's been done. I think your idea reduces the amount of work I will have to do to accomodate 800x600 users.

Cheers ATR and thanks.

David

I am happy to help. Of course, the reality of the changes I suggested is a little more complicated than I made it out to be, but not too much so.

I don't think there's any need to redesign for 800x600--your current layout will work just fine.

Please feel free to PM me for any more discussion of your site.
