View Full Version : Dual vs. Quad Xeons

I'm just now noticing that a lot of places seem to advertise "Quad Xeons," when in actuality they have dual, but they're HyperThreading-enabled, so they appear as four in software.

Is it just me, or is this extremely misleading, if not blatantly fradulent?

Extremely misleading. Either:

1) They don't know any better.
2) They figure their customers won't know any better.
3) They are urgently in need of some customers

I completely agree with you. It's very fraudish, and blatent false advertising.

They are Dual Xeons with HT.

Whoever says they are QUAD are completely misleading people and should be shot.

Very misleading.

I wonder how many websites you could get on a true Quad Xeon. Geez I would hate to have that much weight on my shoulders.

I would think a couple of thousand normal sites.

Totally agree. There is physically only 2 CPU.

You would definately know if it's a real quad xeon. Those boxes go for about 10K each.

You really wouldn't use Quads for hosting virtual sites.. You would use them for other server related things like SGI/CGI, mathamatical computations, database servers, etc.. Using it for hosting virtual sites would be a waste of resources...

And yea.. You really know when you are getting a quad because you feel it in your wallet :D Anyone selling a Dual Xeon with HT as a quad should be shot :D

this would be completely fraudulent. HT is just a smoke screen, really - a souped down version of cache optimizations mips and sparc have had for ages. advertising ht duals as quad is a big no no.

If anyone is promting dual xeons + HT as Quad XEONs, then all of the above there.

Shooting them might be a tad harsh. I'd say a good old fashioned tarring and feathering would to the trick. :D

I knew that I was being sarcastic. Who would want the presure of having a couple of thousand sites on one server.

Most people can say that though because RS's dual xeons are HT. So they show 4 CPU's virtually but only have 2 CPU's physically. I saw some people on gamesnet advertising "Quad Xeon Servers!"

Well ... that's kids for ya!

real quad xeon boxes are very very expensive and are not worth it for hosting. they are primarily OLTP machines where you need to have as much processing power on a single node as possible, because you cant just spread the load by getting two duals. for hosting though getting several duals is much better.

Shooting is good. We are just helping nature along with natural selection - it seems these days retards live long enough to pass down there retard genes - its why we have so many crap webhosting companys in this world - ripping everyone off!

im still looking for someon to advertise UNLIMITED CPU! - ide love one of those - with unlimited space and bandwidth - then all i need is unlimited customers and unlimited uptime - and im ready to take over the world.

Interestingly, almost 1/4 of people said Quad Xeons on the survey?

And hosts shouldn't be shot until after giving me their "Quad" Xeons. Someone's gotta confiscate them, right? ;)
