Shut the computer down for the night...got online this AM and everything was back to normal.....VERY odd...has anyone else had this odd thing happen?

Yes... it is called: Microsoft Windows™
don't look any further... windows sometime changes your fonts, icons, background, animations... then set them back on... or take them again... even without doing anything sometime.

I never have these kind of problems (someone knock on some wood quick!) and I have three NT and 2 '98 systems.

Having worked in tech support for a large company, the biggest reason I found for things going wierd was a customer installing new software. The installation that the author wrote wasn't written well enough and would overwrite some critical files or settings. This confused Windows. Things have gotten much better since then, though.

What?! The smily with the spinning eyes is gone! :( That is just cruel. Ahem. Anyway, the only time I've had anything like that happen was when I started my computer with the monitor off and then turned the monitor on after the screen stuff had loaded. Since it couldn't detect the monitor due to it being off, it went to 640*480. Other than that, windows has never randomly changed things on me.

I like to set my task bar as "auto hide" and "always on top" in Win98. Unfortunately, it keeps forgetting the always on top part and pops up behind open windows. Oh well..

How can you stand that? My mouse always ends up making it pop up when I don't want it to. I feel like taking a sledgehammer to the thing. Well, I did. I finally set it back to just stay there since I would have been driven out of my mind had it stayed like that.

So when is the new windows operating system going to come out? Dell has been promising a free upgrade for months. I assumed that it would be out soon and I REALLY hope that some of the bugs have been worked out. Windows98 won't let me shut my machine down - I guess it thinks that I should be working 24/7. :)

Angela,

Try disabling IRQ Steering - I had a Win98 machine (upgraded from 95) that wouldn't shutdown, and this did the trick. If not, e-mail me, I've got a lot of other suggestions.

Angela, Windows ME (Millenium Edition) is very close to coming out (it's due in precisely two weeks where I am and I believe orders for it have been quite good, despite the noticeable lack of publicity surrounding it). If you look around at The Register @ http://www.theregister.co.uk you should find some relevant tidbits on Windoze ME and other software you may be interested in.

Thanks for the good ideas.

Mike, I'll let you know if the IRQ steering idea works.
