I want to use my Rackshack RaQ to act as the DNS for my Windows 2000 dedicated server as well. Do I need to define a virtual site on the RaQ for the domain that needs to be hosted on the Win2k server?
And is it as easy to setup as a regular domain hosted on your RaQ? I mean, do I just go to the DNS settings and and the "A" records and the MX mail records and put the IP address of the Windows 2000 server instead of the IP of the RaQ server and expect it to work?
Thanks!

Well, if all you need is DNS hosting on the RAQ then you do not need to set up a site on the RAQ, just enter the necessary Name A and MX entry as you would set up the site on the RAQ but just point them to the NT server.
At the DNS Registry, just make sure that the DNS is pointed to the RAQ and you are set.
Of course, on the NT, just make sure that the A and MX entries correspondence to that stated on the Raq.
Once you set the DNS, just get to Telnet on the Raq and try a tracert or ping using the domain name to see if it resolves to the correct IP. I find this useful as waiting for the DNS server to populate may take a couple of days.

Thanks!
Just one question: How do I setup the A and MX records on the NT Server? Do I need to set up DNS on the NT server as well? Then, wouldn't that defy the purpose of RaQ taking care of the DNS?
Thanks

No, you do not need to set up the DNS entries on the NT server. What I was trying to say is that on the RAQ, if you point, say
www.webspace.com -> 123.123.123.1 on the Raq
the website should be set up at IP 123.123.123.1 on the NT .
That goes with the mail server entries.
That's all you need to do.

good article on win2k servers
hehe actually, I was the one who posted that article!
A couple more questions that came to mind were:
1) Does the Win2k need to be setup as a Domain Controller instead of a Peer-to-Peer Server? What are th advantages and disadvantages of doing so?
2) Active Directory- Should this be implemented? Again, advantages/disadvantages
Thanks! I'll be using this server for hosting websites as well as have MS SQL server on it for websites to use databases.

Ok, I've gotten the dedicated Win2k Server and changed the DNS settings in the RaQ. Here's how it's setup:
On Dotster, the DNS is : NS1.MYRAQSERVER.COM and NS2.MYRAQSERVER.COM
On My RaQ DNS, I have the Domain with the "A" address set to IP address of the new server
For my Mail MX settings, do I use the IP number or the Domain? Currently, the domains hosted on my RaQ have an entry like the following for MX
domain.com -> www.domain.com
For a domain to be out of the RaQ, do I still need to point it to www.domain.com or do I point it to the IP address of the new server?
Lastly, after setting this all up and telnetting into my RaQ, I ping and I get the new server's IP, however, on the Internet it's still pinging to the old site.
Should it be like that?? I mean, the way I see it, the NSI Registry(?) is pointing it to my Name Server and my Name Server is pointing it to my IP address. Don't ISP's get info from NSI Registry for the Name Server and then from the Name Server for the IP?
I can understand that NSI takes a day or two to propogate the changes but the changes haven't been made in the NSI settings-, and my Name Server changes should be instantly reflected, right?
Thanks

If you have set a time to live (TTL) in DNS then you will have to wait that length of time for the ISPs to come and recheck your DNS.
Can't remember if RaQs do this or not as we use TinyDNS and not the system that came on the RaQ.
