View Full Version : Levels of membership...

BC

Matt, what number of posts have you set for the various 'levels of membership' here on vBulletin? :)

On a side note, I'd certainly like to see some slightly more 'interesting' descriptions instead of just 'member, senior member' etc. (maybe like Senior Guru for someone like Annette, Duster or yours truly :D)

(edit) And how can I forget Chicken? ;) (/edit)

When I see Senior Member, it makes me think of some old person with a cane and what hair is left is gray.

I do want to hear this from Matt. I mean do not give us a level and not tell us how to get to the next above. The levels do not a mean a lot to me, if someone can answer a question that i have i like them , whethera they may be a newbie or not,Annette should get something special because she has done a lot for this forum as far as post go.

Yeah, what is up the member levels?

BC: I'd prefer to be a Linux Guru. Senior makes me think of old people.

It looks to me that the following outlines how you get to a certain level.

posts level
-----------------------
0-50 Junior Member
50-100 Member
100+ Senior Member

We also need a net.god user level.

ROFLMAO @ Annette!

Hmmm... Linux Guru sounds great, but I'm equally conversant at either Linux or NT, so I'm not so sure about that.

Here's my suggestions :

1-30 posts : startup dot.com member.
30-100 posts : junior guru wannabe.
100-150 posts : guru with grey streaks in his hair.
150-200 posts : WHL evangelist (with apologies to SitePoint's descriptions)
200+ posts : Hosting God (aka have way too much time on your hands)

:D Whaddya think?

Annette, You haved help everyone on this forum at least twice, you helped me when i needed it. And You should be ADMIN. Don't be modest. Who has not been helped by Annette please raise your hand. I don't see anyone raising their hands, do you Annette?

BC

*timidly raises his hand*

Sorry, Annette, no credit where it's not due :D

But you'll get my vote for admin too if it comes around! ;)

I don't much care for titles myself, nor attach any relevance to them. I judge the information posted on its own merits with perhaps some weighing by who said it and how cogent an argument they make. I've learned from people who were posting here long before I arrived, and from those who made their first posts after I arrived. The quality of their posts is far more important than the quantity.

While I would tend to doubt that this forum would become anything like those at ODP/dmoz, judging from the personalities here, I still wouldn't want to see any kind of class or elitist titles. For its higher level editors, ODP seems to a tract and promote the smug and arrogant, and they act as if no knowledge acquired before one became an editor is relevant.

For those who think senior means old, you need to expand your thinking. After all, senior high school students aren't old (unless you're in junior high or lower).

The bard said it well, "What's in a name? A rose would smell as sweet" (and an idiot is still an idiot even if he's made 100+ posts) Okay, he didn't say that last part, and you get the point. Quality, not quantity, is what counts.

BC
08-29-2000, 11:26 PM
Duster, your points are taken. However, what I was more thinking along the lines of was of using titles with a slightly more humorous slant so as to serve the dual purpose of not only making newbies feel at ease, but inject a bit of lightness into the forum, which has occasionally got bogged down badly in terms of the topics being discussed.

(geez, I'm starting to sound like Duster! Is that a good thing? :D)

Annette
08-29-2000, 11:36 PM
I lean more towards Duster's view - quality more than quantity. The things I do here, I do everywhere I go, and I don't think any more particularly of it in those other places than I do here. Although I wouldn't mind "Queen Bitch of the Universe", a moniker which I'm sure several people here would willingly let me have. :)

I too agree with Duster.

Duster
08-30-2000, 02:59 PM
Humorous titles could be nice. I admit that "junior member" and "senior member" are a bit droll, and really don't mean anything. Unfortunately, since they are a system setting based on number of posts, they probably don't allow for individual titles. If they did, I would suggest "Den mother" for Annette, who isn't even close to being the queen bitch of the universe, not even a royal princess (or pain). (I knew a few people who are much more qualified for the title than Annette).

Maybe something like

0-50 still has a real life
50-100 becoming a cyborg
100+ no life outside of cyberspace

MikeA

I agree, I like the Den Mother thing for Annette. But what would we call you Duster?

angela
08-30-2000, 06:14 PM
Names based on post quantities are even less helpful if the number of posts recorded are wrong. If it matters, notice that the post numbers for people are not counting properly - most are staying at one number (or maybe it was a gliche when we changed forums).

MattF

I'll look into changing the titles tomorrow :) Should be fun, I don't want to offend people though (most people are okay with a bit of humour) as some visitors are very 'what's the word'.

Duster
08-30-2000, 07:31 PM
Humorless generally describes them well.

BC
08-30-2000, 07:50 PM
LOL @ Duster! Now that's a bit cruel..... :p

Duster
08-30-2000, 08:25 PM
It's neither cruel nor kind, just a simple statement of fact. Humor is one of the many qualities that some of us possess more of than others. It's not cruel to say so any more than it is cruel to say someone is taller (or shorter) than most.

I believe, for the most part, that most things are not inherently good or bad, they simply are. We attach value judgments to them. However, the same action can have both "positive" and "negative" results, and how we view them is often the determining factor. Life is full of surprises.

The real voyage of discovery consists not in finding new lands, but in having new eyes.

Duster totally agree with you. I have a burned eye due to lax responsiabillity. And that proved your point, things are what they are. People who are lazy are lazy 99%of the time afterwards. Some people like to work on cars others like to work on computers. Some people like to work out others do not. We are all human and we all have a mindset which someone else has to, unless you are a maniac who wants to rule the world. Names are names, people are people, scum are scum.

A teacher left out Sodium Hydroxide pH level of 14, takes less than 10 second to burn through the skin let alone an eye. Boy got a hold of it and squirted it in my eye, the teacher told me to splash water from a sink into it, then took me to a broken eye wash station where water got all over the floor and a vice principal said we cant have water getting all over the floor take him to a water fountain. Now I was always told to trust an adult in the stuff like that because they were supposed to be up to code and know how to handle it. No one has said they are sorry, not that sorry wold bring back damage or anything. But thats a little of the story. Get my signature, Love the names Matt.

[Sniffing Noise]

I am touched to be honored with the distinguished title, "Junior Guru Wannabe." I would like to thank Web Hosting Talk, Admin, my mother, my dog Texi, all of my extended family and friends, and everyone who has ever helped me for making this possible.

Some say we must look to the past, but I say we must look to the future. We must take care of the future for sake of our children…

Okay, I am done with my “acceptance speech.”

All in good humor ;)

Talk about membership levels... I just noticed that I am now a Web Hosting Guru ????!!!!!!

Now that is something I, for one, sure don't deserve to be titled as !!!

Either one is a Learner or one is a Guru !!! One cannot be both at the same time !!!

And I think I would rather be a real Learner and learn from the real gurus out here !!!

Just thinking, it would be a good idea if SysAdmin raised the levels of membership after a few weeks... otherwise all of us ignorant Mortals will become knowledgeable Gods soon !!!

That should not happen !!! :D

Au contraire. The beginning of wisdom is the realization that there is much beyond our understanding. Guru means one who sheds light, one who illuminates the darkness. Since no one possesses all the knowledge on every topic (or even a single topic), even a reasonably intelligent person realizes that life is a learning process, that the teacher may learn from the student.

In fact, I recall learning something from you several weeks ago. I was going to comment on the Learner being a teacher except that I thought it too obvious that each of us may learn as well as teach.

Why WHL Evangalist? I think that I'm the only one with this title. I have 40 more posts to go to get to the "god" status.
