View Full Version : Dual AMD?
mikeknoxv 08-02-2001, 11:52 AM Hello,
I noticed that elitepc.com is selling dual AMD 1.2ghz servers. Has anyone had any experience with ElitePC? Would I be better off going with a dual 1.2ghz AMD server instead of the more traditional dual 800mhz-1ghz PIII server?

Thats a nice motherboard! Personally I have found t-birds to be every bit (better) as good as intel.
wired1 08-02-2001, 05:11 PM I definitely preffer AMD too, I know as far a a single cpu setup on a server, I would prefer an Athlon over a pIII. As far as Dual CPU, I would wait and here a bit more from others first on performance issues. But with Athlons being cheaper, I was thinking of taking the plunge into building a bunch of boxes BUT Im not real sure how the general public would take to anything not Intel. Hmmm....
mithilesh 08-02-2001, 09:59 PM But as I heard AMD processor heat in less time thats why many people prefer PIII processer.
Cyberpunk 08-04-2001, 08:34 PM But not excessively so in my limited experience (depends how much you oc' them :D - but obviously not in a webserver).
Rumor has it the next AMD core will run cold at 1.5GHZ+
And to PIII fans out there, even if you wouldnt go AMD, thank them for causing Intel some price competition in the market. Remember the bad old days when Intel dominated the market, and the prices?

Paul L. 08-05-2001, 02:05 AM We have a dual AMD 1.2ghz server in a 1U case and have been testing it for well over a month running at 100% of both cpus and heating is not and issue. Its all about the Case and the cooling fans.
But I would also not be so quick to jump up and go buy one there are still a few issues to work thru all the manufactuers are way behind in production and well not putting out the best product in the world right now, I was told 1 out of every 10 cpus right now is bad or has problems. And if you dont have a good cooling case then your also asking for problems.
multipleimage 08-05-2001, 07:55 AM it is sad when 1 out of every 10 is bad :bawling:

Yes, maybe for now. But how long have Intel been in the business developing and improving their production plants?
AMD have done all their development in much less time than Intel and they're up now or in a not very long time to kick intel off the top chart of processor sales.
I personally think AMD ROCKS :agree:
(offtopic from the post: I DO NOT agree that processor speed doubles every 18 month Just wait 2 or 3 years more and this law will be outdated.)

Cyberpunk 08-05-2001, 06:55 PM I'm not so sure about the failure rate, AMD's are in focus more because of their status. There have been a lot of 'urban myths' about all the cpus :D
When I used to build machines in large quantities we used to see all sorts of strage things with cpus (IBM/CYRIX were by far the worst and weirdest).
There are some interesting tbirds > axia (http://www.overclockers.co.uk/acatalog/Online_Catalogue_Overclocked_AMD_CPU_s_21.html#a255)
There are fast and slow times for all h/w, if the companies speed race their stuff all the time people get shy about spending on updated systems because of the depreciation so no one wins. AMD may well overtake intel but theyve learned hard for over hyping before.
I think all the big cpu companies could beat the 2 year rule if they wanted to but always going that fast would be bad business for them but good business for the customer in only some ways.
One of my pet myths for intel being preferred over amd is system noise :) , up till now the cooling for amd's has often made them noisier.
Jbiz, which version did you use, I hear thats the best board of the lot at the moment. I could swear I saw a demon 2 tbird board from Iwill somewhere but I forget where.
JBIZ718 08-05-2001, 07:27 PM My IT person is very into hardware.
So im building a Linux CPU with a few different panels for testing and what not for home.
The board is this:
IWILL KK266 Plus, VIA Apollo KT133A Chipset, 266MHz Bus, ATA100. Socket A Motherboard with Sound, 6-PCI, 1-ISA (1 shared), 1-AGP, 3-DIMM, on-board 5.1 Channel Audio.
Im going to put probably a 900mhz Duran, and about 1gb of Ram
Should be decent for testing.

ckizer 08-05-2001, 07:39 PM I think it would be wise to wait a bit before using the AMD dual processors in rack mounted servers. The are known to overheat and although the are definetly faster, they have quirky little problems. As soon as they are posted as stable, I will definetly pop them in my servers.
multipleimage 08-05-2001, 07:43 PM i have heard of some problems but i do know someone who is using one and doesnt have any problems with it. but i would be carefull if you do try it.
Cyberpunk 08-06-2001, 03:02 AM I wonder if these guys ever made stuff for rackmount.
Kryotech (http://www.kryotech.com/)
Brings me to another question - Anyone ever used peltier coolers for their servers? They can be made pretty thin and I got curious thinking about it. They use a LOT of power apparently though.
