View Full Version : Pet Depot: Offering 300$ to the best designer.
Pet Depot 07-29-2003, 07:43 PM We are a petstore, trying to get our store online. Make us a web template, we like the look of petsmart.com (dont rip it, but its the kind of style we like.
This is a contest, which is why we are paying so much, post your templates here, and we will select the best one.
We are a petstore offering supplies for all animals, but this year were are going for a reptile theme, so use reptile (lizards) photos.
thanks.
Pet Depot 07-29-2003, 07:47 PM or if you have a premade one, that would be fine too, as long as it is exclusive.
le4ch 07-29-2003, 07:48 PM when is that final date for you choosing them ( want to know if i have time to build one )
thanks,
garrett
silock 07-29-2003, 07:53 PM im in.
Deg Co 07-29-2003, 07:56 PM no time limit, but im looking to find the best design, asap. Once see one i like, i will buy it.
GBeldam 07-29-2003, 07:56 PM could i suggest you create this contest at yaxay? you have a fair amount of money to give away.. and would get a better amount of designers there, since they actually have a secure way of having contests..
I am interested in joining this.. but I doubt i will do it on WHT, as they have no security for contests..
BdSBB 07-29-2003, 07:57 PM checking in. :)
Deg Co 07-29-2003, 07:57 PM tnx exo, i will consider it.
GBeldam 07-29-2003, 07:58 PM alright please do, because i really want to do this, but most likely will not on wht.
csihost 07-29-2003, 07:59 PM Are we talking a whole shopping cart or just a few pages? If we are talking a whole shopping cart like petsmart.com, I must be living in a different world, because we get way more than $300 per site.
Pet Depot 07-29-2003, 08:02 PM No, i just need a .psd template. We have programmers to do the shopping cart.

I hire people for design, scripting and other stuff almost on a daily basis, $300 definatly is not alot for a good template.
I suggest you check out the real world of desinging.
and I suggest www.Ravio.com
They are near(if not are) the best.
Pet Depot 07-29-2003, 08:15 PM We have a set budget of 300$, we have decided to withhold from spending any more. It seems to be a good price, and alot of people at WHT seem to think so.
Theres no need to trash this thread regarding the price, all he is asking for is a good template, for a decent designer thats no more than 4 hours of work. Relax, if you dont like the prize, don't enter.
I will be submitting a design in the very very near future :D
BTW
Do you have any specific colors or the such in mind ?
Do you require certain features or just what petsmart has on their site?
Deg Co 07-29-2003, 08:24 PM im in too.
Pet Depot 07-29-2003, 08:32 PM i like the petsmart colours.
RajanUrs 07-29-2003, 09:04 PM Do you have a logo or type style for "Pet Depot" or is that also needed ?
CrazyTech 07-29-2003, 09:07 PM $300 is plenty for a design he is talking about devil...perhaps you should check out the real word ;) Prices have come way down for decent designs. (hate to take up space with this but I think this is a great offer)
EasyWebSol 07-29-2003, 09:53 PM I am currently in the process of creating a design for this contest, which I hope and believe that you will like.
It should be ready in not too long.
Pet Depot 07-29-2003, 10:00 PM great!
gfxdoodler 07-29-2003, 10:48 PM i am also working on a design, i will show it to you soon.
gfxdoodler 07-29-2003, 11:12 PM ok, i created a great logo for yout company. It is 'Pet Depot' right?
Please can you tell me the main sections of your site, like products, services...
thanks

There, I created a basic design for Pet Depot!
Since I know little about what you want on your site, I just added something from the example site in the Featured Sales section.
The rest of the stuff you want can be in the Main Menu, such as links to various parts of your site such as your store information, and small features like Pet Food Calculators and stuff like that I saw on PetSmart (just a few examples).
If you are interested, and there is anything you don't like and want me to change just let me know what and I'll change it for you!
I am looking forward to hearing from you.
Best regards,
Lars-Christian Simonsen

Pet Depot 07-29-2003, 11:59 PM You can just make up the sections right now (or use petsmarts)
Easyweb, its a good start, but not what we had in mind.
BdSBB 07-30-2003, 12:06 AM http://www.directwd.com/contest/petdepot.gif
Well, I hope to see everyone elses designs aswell. I've designed a template with space for shopping cart products and such. I kept it clean for small button advertisements that might be placed on the web site.
Thanks for your business!

I almost laughed at this one... I'm not a great designer by any means, just landed a client paying $1500 for a basic web presence. Yeah it's a great offer... pretty soon Ravio and PixelBrick will be jumping in on a "contest"...
gfxdoodler 07-30-2003, 12:25 AM ok , here is my start:
http://64.246.62.50/~newtut/pet.gif
I went for unique look. I want your comments on everything like logo, colors, structure.... I created an icon-type menu on the top, I will create unique icons for different sections. I can make each menu icon different color if you want. I was not trying too hard because it is only a contest and I am not sure that I will win so if you like my design I will complete it. Everything can be changed, I will also add some stuff tomorrow.
Tell me if you like it, because if you dont there is no reason for me to complete this design..
thanks.
EasyWebSol 07-30-2003, 12:29 AM Easyweb, its a good start, but not what we had in mind.
It's just an outkast. Everything can be changed like I said, simply point out what it is you don't like, and want changed.
If you aren't able to point out the differences, I'm gonna have to throw in the towel on this one, as I have quite a few other projects I am working, and I do not have time to start all over again :)
liam_tmt7 07-30-2003, 12:54 AM yeah count me in
Liam
EasyWebSol 07-30-2003, 02:25 AM Pot Depot
After reviewing your examples, and the two other designs, I think I have gotten a better impression of what you are looking for.
Based on this, I have created a new template, which surpasses the previous one in looks and flexibility. I am hoping you will like this new template, which you can see at
http://www.easywebsol.com/petdepot/template2.jpg
Please post your thoughts on this!
Best regards,

SpeedFreak 07-30-2003, 03:00 AM ok, im up for this - i will have an entry later today :)
Cheers
BeaNTriX 07-30-2003, 03:10 AM I'm in 'the contest'!
Wait to be amazed with my template! What I've seen so far would be a work that I could do in less than one hour.
Wait for my  entry!
Sincerly,
BeaNTriX
DefiantPc 07-30-2003, 07:02 AM Started a template, let me know if its not what your loking for so I don't put anymore work into it.
Here (http://www.defiantpc.com/test/pets.html)
Will be working on it later today.
:)
ubergeek22 07-30-2003, 08:47 AM Please take a look at my attempt (http://www.thisisben.co.uk/images/petdepot.jpg) and let me know what you think. I've taken a complete break from the PetSmart look to come with something even better!
Obviously I can show you a better quality, non-watermarked one if you wish. Please let me know if you'd like to see some changes (I'll swap the ladybird over to a lizard if I can find a nice pic). Do you have an existing logo to use? I've just put in a simple one, I can change that as well if you like.
I look foward to hearing from you :)
Devil and Comp, its obvious you don't understand.
[ off topic ]
All this design requires is a template, by no means whatsoever does it require any coding or building of an actual web presence. I've landed several 1K + clients as well, but they aren't requesting this simple kind of work. PixelBrick and Ravio cannot adapt their styles to this kind of work, remember that as well. Corey from Ravio can only complete the futurastic kind of design we are all getting too used to. Also, both of them have actual employees and therefore overhead that they need to cover. Most WHT designers are freelancing part timers and therefore can work for a much cheaper price. Thats why lots of projects such as just are posted here, the cheap prices. While it may not be good for the design industry, if you'r a half decent designer and a good marketer you can land plenty of large clients. So sit back, relax and watch the fun. :D

Pet Depot 07-30-2003, 10:20 AM These templates seem nice, but dont match the "proffesionality" of the petsmart one. You can see that the site made by petsmart is both fun, and proffessional. I have seen one i like by PM, but i will wait for more entries.
Pet Depot 07-30-2003, 10:21 AM i kinda like this one http://www.thisisben.co.uk/images/petdepot.jpg
but its a bit too simple, spice it up, and we may consider it.
PixelAxis 07-30-2003, 11:28 AM Expect something from me in a few hours...
Is this design to be sliced into html as well or do you just require the PSD?
ubergeek22 07-30-2003, 03:13 PM I've made some quick changes, please let me know what you think. I've got a couple of ideas to completely re-do it but I'm afraid I don't have time (for what could be turned down) to do it now. The new design is http://www.thisisben.co.uk/images/petdepot2.jpg (I also have a 2.9mb .bmp that looks a lot clearer, I can email this to you if you want).
The changes are the addition of the silver bar, the custom buttons at the top (for "view cart", "checkout" and "help") and the "latest news", which would be a scrolling news ticker.
Please let me know what you think.
PixelAxis 07-30-2003, 03:16 PM I think the contest holder needs to provide more details, it's just too suspicious right now
DefiantPc 07-30-2003, 04:10 PM Heres my 2nd entry again if you don't like it let me know so I dont Put any more effort into it.

prelude785 07-30-2003, 05:14 PM I'll be entering this as well. Expect an entry sometime today or tommorow.

ubergeek22 08-01-2003, 04:58 AM Any update to this?
RajanUrs 08-01-2003, 05:33 AM Nice work Defiant and ThisisBen, I have given up already before starting on my design after seeing yours. :D
ubergeek22 08-01-2003, 11:07 AM Lol, it's not that good, I'm sure you could do better! (I'm thisisben BTW) - it would be good to have an update PetDepot.
joshmorrow 08-01-2003, 12:54 PM I'm working on the design right now, how it turns out well!
joshmorrow 08-01-2003, 04:54 PM I'm 3/4 of the way finished... and heres the screenshot, I'm still adding A BUNCH. :) Hope you like it. Oh and please point out anything I should add/change while I'm working on it, such as the company quote, etc, etc.
http://69.22.22.83/petdepot.jpg
I think more colors should be added too, but I'm not sure what colors exactly you are aiming for.
joshmorrow 08-01-2003, 05:06 PM I'd say I'm 2/4 of the way done... a bit of over exaggeration!
BeaNTriX 08-01-2003, 05:59 PM Joshmorrow, I'd say you're 1/2 done. :stickout
joshmorrow 08-01-2003, 06:13 PM yea, couldve reduced it!
GBeldam 08-03-2003, 03:39 PM is there anyway i can contact you to show you my design? if so please contact me over aim/msn and I'll show you what I've done.

adland 08-04-2003, 01:38 PM Hmm...I see Katie's Pet Depot has had a trademark since 1992. And now a new trademark application for Pet Depot has just been filed by the same registrant.
Guessing here...after the new trademark is approved they are planning to wrest control of PetDepot.com from PetSmart.
BeaNTriX 08-06-2003, 08:01 AM So did anybody have received contact from Pet Depot?
ubergeek22 08-09-2003, 12:14 PM I think the site might be www.petdepot.biz - as you noticed, the .com redirects to petsmart.com.
I sent them an email but got no reply :/
