I am looking for list server solution for 500K users - 1 millions users.
I need the system to allow users to subscribe to a monthly newsletter (and unsubscribe also) so list server software to handle this is essential. This is not for SPAM!!!! Only customers who ask for the newsletter will receive it.
I have no idea who would host such high email numbers. Most hosts I looked at offer maximums of 10,000 users for their list services.
I am not asking for quotes although I will need to know a ballpark range cost for something like this at some point...just want to know who does this sort of thing as I did a search and only found a couple companies.
I just don't know where to look at this point.
If anyone knows a service that can provide me this...thank you

Between the hardware, bandwidth and management, you're looking at around $900-$1,500/month USD ballpark. Although it's a very big ballpark for massive mailing solutions and you might also look into bulletproof hosting as some companies may not accept you due to the high volume of e-mail; spam or not.

Yea Lyris would be 2,000 per month for 1 million 10kb emails.

Thank you everyone...it gives me an idea of what I am looking at.
I found a couple services that seem to be in the range of what I've been given here so it is good to know.

You could do this pretty easily with a Unix box and qmail and ezlm (something like that, dont really feel like looking it up atm). Security Focus has some huge mailing lists and thats the software they run. We've run some lists with it and once you get the hang of the tools its very easy to maintain.

My current web host is running ezlm so I will test the software on my existing package to get the hang of it...features..how it works ect. They say their packages should be able to handle 50,000 and beyond that ask about custom packages .....awaiting their answer.
The problem is that I don't want to have to manage this because then it becomes my responsibility. If something goes wrong my client will blame me whereas if they are using a 3rd party providor and that relieves me of any problems. OF course I want to reccommend something reliable and goods so there is a little risk I guess but that I am willing to take.
but in the meantime I will play with exlm and get more experience with this software and/ore service...it's a little knew to me so I am worried a bit about server load , bandwidth, and SPAM and whatever else I don't know about that can cause problems.

I doubt exim could handle the load.
qmail - http://cr.yp.to/qmail.html
ezmlm - http://cr.yp.to/ezmlm.html
http://www.ezmlm.org/ (ezmlm-idx extended ezmlm package)
What is ezmlm?
ezmlm is an easy-to-use, high-speed mailing list manager for qmail.
