Ok this has been covered to some degree but I am still confused.
I have a raq4 with rackshack, I have about 10 sites pointed to ns1.rackshack.net, on signing up I specified a domain as my main domain. Say mattsdomain.com.
Now I want to do 2 things, run my own DNS and change the main domain to to which all the others point from mattsdomain.com to newdomain.com.
If I go in and set up newdomain.com using these instructions http://pkg.nl.cobalt.com/howto/cobalt_dns_howto.html
can I then change the name servers of the other sites to ns1.newdomain.com without any down time, because while the changes propogate rackshack should still route them to the ip of my box.
My resistrar is powerpipe.com, they have this in their faq
Q) Can I use other name servers besides those provided?
A) Yes, you can use any name servers that you like, as long as the are already known to the registry.
How then do I get newdomain.com to point to my ip.
I hope this makes at least some sense, thankyou in advance for any help.
