I know this might sounds horrible (I have been playing Black & White lately:) ) but every day we hear about newbie's wanting hosting space and they usually ask about crap hosts.

Would it be a good idea to start a webcompany to take advantage of these people? :D Of do some of you already do it?

Ummmm, take advantage of people? Are we trying to get a bad reputation before we even open?

you might want to word that as "marketing towards" and "new webmasters" ;)

otherwise it sounds quite very very bad

Maybe he mean something not exactly bad/unethical, but a host name that sounds evil/unkind for those who like the alternatives. Just like the game B & W, there is choice to choose being bad (i didn't play but saw a review somewhere).

Hee.. I'm just presuming..

anyway.. i think he was asking if he'd be an evil host if he setup a hosting business to 'take advantage of newbies' because they're always going with crappy webhosts to begin with. ...not to say that i think he meant he'd be providing inferior service (I certainly hope not...) but his wording gives one the feeling that running a business with good ethics isn't on the top of the list, taking advantage of... could mean so many things like overcharging, not providing the services as advertised, etc... but i'm hoping that he meant, as my earlier post has said, that he would be "marketing towards" verus "taking advantage of." Using that phrase is definitely going to give people a bad impression, can you just see it? A banner ad... "Taking advantage of newbies since August 2001!" I'm sure that'll generate a lot of signups! :-P

a hosting company whose client base is primarily of people with their first website is probably going to have a much higher ratio of support requests than a mixed company and of course much higher than one where the majority of clients being internet veterans.

In these days of soooo many hosting companies you pretty much need to find a niche to market towards, general webhosting for the small guys probably won't pull the tide. We certainly tailor our packages to a certain client set, and has worked generally well.

Ah. Wouldn't it be funny to register that and setup the dns record to point to *****'s ip address?

I was thinking how something like www.EvilHost.com might be very sucessful, in the fact that you would go there to see whats going on.
And its so easy to remember, think about it, if you were reading a internet magazine and browsing through all the host adverts in the back and you saw evilhost.com...
Wouldn't it show out more and kind of make you go there?
Curiosity would get the better of you.

So i checked for evilhost.com and guess what, someones allready grabbed it! :bawling:

I was thinking on evilhost.com and i came up with another real funny name, one that would surely grab peoples attention.
I will fill in a * as you will know what i mean.
shi*host.com and guess what...

Someone's allready grabbed it! :stickout
Register.com doesn't let you search for words like that but try looking on another register.

lol

P.S the star is supposed to be a T ;)

Badhost.. in fact, this is one of the domain I've came across at deleteddomains.com sometimes ago, thought to registering it but didn't, until yesterday the first post by Furton just reminded me :) I head straight to stargateinc for both .com and .net.

And for those who knows about my registration problem posted on the general forum yesterday (http://www.webhostingtalk.com/showthread.php?threadid=17049), it's working fine now and ... now what should i do with them :D

Lol, I'm not planning on opening my own hosting company (not for at least 5 years). I was just wondering if anyone did do stuff like that :cartman:

Imagine the customer base, and for support = no support:D

Well we've got a few hosters like that in Italy.
One of them asks for about $21/year unlimited space unlimited bandwith.
Everybody is complaining about services (mails are answered in 3 weeks if ever) but after a bit more than a year they've got about 60,000 customers.
Not bad huh?

We don't agree with their choice but market seems accepting these companies as well.

Well I could see it working as a marketing tool evilhosting.com would stick in my mind..

Just look at the fosters adverts.. not exactly a professional image but it sells plenty of beer.

Well, I recently found out that myhostsucks is not available.
But, on the flip side, yourhostsucks is still there.
Probably not for long though. Someone's going to read this and go claim it.

hmm. . . .The fun to be had with just the emails between those two :D

blah@myhostsucks.com writes to blah@yourhostsucks.com, "whacha talkin' bout??
