View Full Version : cheep canadian bandwith providers?
demonmoo 07-26-2003, 11:22 PM | Hi , I'm checking out cheep canadian bandwith providers . So far the only one I have found is PSInet and I'm a bit cautious because of there connection to cogentco . Any PSInet experience out there or any suggestions of a better isp in the low price area?
I'm looking for something in the 20mbs to 200mbs area . |
PSI have been acquired by Cogent. That's why you're going thru Cogent. None of the canadian provider is cheap. Which city are you looking at currently? |
demonmoo 07-26-2003, 11:32 PM | Ottawa (Ontario ).
I'm looking at trunking down to toronto (bell sales rep has yet to get back to me about price for 100mbs to toronto) .
I have also looked at ottawa telecom ; however they seem a bit ritch (I'm tempted though ; when I phoned them they said that they would offer 100% UUnet bandwith ..... So tempting...)
What can I expect to pay for something in that ball park (20mbs to 200mbs). I would like something closer to 45mbs (however if I can find a 100mbs link with a good price I'd go for that) .
(Note : I checked out the local providers , but none of them have a network of 600mbs(local) and most of them have a horible repuatation for extreem overselling) .
One them even selse gig-e connections , but there max bandwith is 600mbs ???wtf???. |
Expect to pay alot to be in Canada. I have check with Shaw bigpipe once, and they wanted quite a high price, i won't post them here since I kind of feel that it is unethical. If you like, contact me by IM. I'm looking for Canadian bandwidth too. I'm in Vancouver though. |
Cephren 07-27-2003, 10:50 AM PSInet in U.S was taken over largely by Cogentco.
PSInet Canada was taken over by Telus.
The CEO and CFO of ex_PSInet Canada all went to Fusepoint.
I beleive Fusepoint are connected to many backbones. Might want to try them. They have 2 data centers...one in Vancouver, and their biggest one is in Toronto.
They do have the most impressive Datacenter in Canada though as I was there on a visitor pass last week. Never seen a NOC so impressive in my life. wow wow wow.
I mean all NOCS have redundant Power, HVAC systems....but they have backups for every redundant systems too.... now thats extreme =)~~~ ie: in a scenario where their backup HVAC system goes down, a third HVAC system kicks in.
If youre thinking of colocating or getting dedicated servers, Fusepoint is worth going to in Cananda. If youre just looking for a provider to run a line into your office or home....good luck.... Bell charges a heck of alot for the local loop for any provider in Ontario. Meaning if you choose MCI (UUNET) you will have to pay MCI the fees for the line and on top of that pay Bell Canada for the local loop. |
Trimax 07-27-2003, 11:15 AM Is the website of Fusepoint, Fusepoint.ca? |
Trimax 07-27-2003, 11:23 AM http://www.cogentco.com/news/releases/2002/news_11072002.htm
Check that link out.. It shows that Cogent (PSInet) is providing bandwidth to CA |

Cephren 07-27-2003, 11:54 AM Yes Cogent is providing bandwidth up to Canada after its acquisition of Allied Riser. Allied Riser runs Stoc.net, a sub of AR which is Cogent's way of running the service up to Canada. |
JohnnyUtah 07-27-2003, 12:24 PM demonmoo would Montreal be a good alternative for you? |

Yeah, a little strange. Who knows though. |
xfire 05-06-2004, 07:21 AM Don't confuse Fusepoint's Toronto Datacenter with their NOC. Their NOC is actually the security desk up front!!!

Or you could choose to pipe it in from Seattle or New York. |
