Hi all..

What do you guys do for Liability/Business Insurance? I can't find a local agent that understands what I am doing. (running a web host from my house and co-locating servers somewhere), they just don't get it.

Just incorporate or become a LLC. That should do it for you (I think).

Ah.. NO.. The last time I checked this does not give you INSURANCE.. Becomming a corp or LLC only shields you personally but as a business you should still have LIABILITY INSURANCE..

Doesn't anyone here have insurance? or is everyone driving without?

I think you'll find that much of what Liability/Business insurance covers isn't all that applicable to your situation.

What do you want insurance for (what liabilities) exactly?

We'll I don't know.. I guess if someone sues the company for negligence there is some protection. Or if I drop a server down on someones foot at the data center.. You know those kind of things..

If you drop a server on someone's foot - would workmans comp cover it ? Also if your worried about law suits - legal matters, I would advise getting an attorney. Currently I have prepaid legal services, and am quite happy with the results.

I heard this from someone else.

Basicly when dealing with this, do not talk to the agent about servers and what not. Say you are a buissness and looking for coverage from whatever. There is coverage for equiptment failure and stuff like that. Search around geekvillage.com, thats were the post was. You might be able to find more information there.

We are incorporated...you have got to be very careful how you are handling your finances. The first thing that a charging attorney will do is find a way to "pierce the corporate shield" and they know what to look for...we still carry a umbrella liability insurance policy. Ask your agent about umbrella liability insurance coverage. It is not that expensive but you will need to know how much coverage you want. Also make sure you look for exclusions. Not fun I know but if you are worried about it then it maybe worth the cost for your peace of mind.

Good luck.

Hi, I know what you are talking about: Public Liability insurance.

For example:

A car cleaner rips the leather seat in a car, with public liability insurance this will cover him against costs to repaire the car or any damages.

This is hosting so I am assuming you want to be protected against a potential law suit againt you if something happens to some ones data etc, most T and C will cover this but it doesnt stop people trying to take you down. People are like this, if they think they can make some money and screw your company they will try.

Big league hosts may possibly have public liability of millions, 10's of millions of pounds. Simply if they get sued they are in the clear for damages or expenses.

Personally look in to public liablity insurance of a million pounds or more for your company.

You can check with Rollins Insurance. See this URL

http://rollinsinsurance.com/frames/main.asp?scr=../insurance/commercial/technology.html

for more information about liability insurance for technology companies.

There are a well-respected insurance company in our area and a member of the Westchester Information Technology Cluster (as am I), a government-business entity that promotes high-tech businesses in Westchester County, NY.

While I have not approached them about liability insurance for my company (I probably should), they would be the first place I, myself, would go to because I know they are experienced in this field.

I haven't looked too closely at their website, but I think there is info there you might find helpful.

I'm not affiliated with them in anyway, just a neighbor, so to speak.

Sean
