I'm just your regular entrepreneur.
I am very interested in starting my own host, and plan on doing so this fall.

I have alot of expertise in marketing, accounting, as well as many other sectors of the business world.

However, i do not know alot about webhosting.
(lets just say, i would need a techie guy with me because i know next to nothing about this stuff).
**edit.
i know nothing about tech stuff, i do know a bit about hosting itself.
end edit**

I would LOVE, if somebody who runs a hosting company, would 'mentor' me.
Somebody i could chat with every once in a while, when i have questions, somebody to steer me in the right direction.

Would anybody be kind enough to 'mentor' me?
Teach me a few things?

Thanks ;)

Ciao!~

Well, ou surely can't ask all the questions you want to ask here. I suppose we'll let you off the hook this time. Just try to share your experiences with the forum so that you make up for it. It might be useful to someone.

Just be carefull what and who you get advice from. Not everyone is an expert and if you ask 10 people you will get 10 answers in this business.

Okay. . . . I like the idea of keeping most of it here:D
I plan on starting by reselling because I don't have the technical expertise to run a server; although getting my own servers would be my goal.
How would someone gain the knowledge to run a hosting business on their own servers?
Where would you suggest we begin?

Well, I'd either buy or check the local library for some books on DNS/BIND APACHE/LINUX etc. and just read a bit. Also check out sites like http://www.apache.org and maybe some newbie linux type sites (have bookmarks on another computer, will post though you can google it and find by searching for that term).

Also, set up a 486 at home and play around. Break, fix, break, fix and so on.

hmm, im interested in learning some more unix as well...

any books / online resources some of you experienced guys can recommend? :)

also, i've installed redhat on an old pentium 133mhz - now, my question is... do hosts install the xwindows? (those windows-like GUI like KDE or gnome) or do they just install the shell/command line only?
